Question on shifting, help for a newb
 

Hey guys, I'm still pretty new to the world of a manual transmission, so bear(bare?) with me...
Every so often when I shift into a higher gear, and let off the clutch, I hear the engine rev a little higher before it gets to that low point that you should hear right after you switch gears. It seems to happen when shifting from 2nd to 3rd a lot in my case. I can't seem to figure out what I'm doing. Am I giving to much gas when I'm letting off the clutch? Any insights would be appreciated

Could be. Are you letting up on the clutch too slowly? Or maybe your clutch is slipping. The former can lead to the latter. Don't wear out your clutch. But if you do, don't tell anyone. But at least it would be a good time to put in a light-weight flywheel.

Mine did that too (2nd to 3rd) for the first day or two I had it until I got used to the clutch. Maybe you just need some more time with your car? If it jumps up maybe 500 rpm then your only problem is you need to get used to it. If its significantly more than that you may have a bigger problem :Eyecrazy:

Are you shure its not Trans whine? these MT on the 8 tend to do that.

I'm pretty sure there is no big problem, cause my brother who is good with a manual transmission doesn't have it happen so I'm guessing it is user error. I haven't had the car for even a week yet so I think I just need a little more time on the car to get used to it.

I'm guessing you give too much gas before the clutch is actually let out fully. You don't have to gas before the gear is active. Or it may be that you are too sudden off the gas pedal, instead of doing a smooth motion. The guy who bought my MX-5 got the same sound, so I figure it's one of those, not used to clutch release spot.

Just don't let out the clutch too slowly, and no matter what, don't rest your left foot on the clutch pedal--that's called riding the clutch and you can wear it out in a day. Tires and brake pads are easier to replace than a clutch.

A) before switching gears you're pressing the clutch before taking your foot off the gas.

B) after switching gears you're pressing the gas before letting your foot off the clutch

Problem, too much gas relative to clutch / too much clutch relative to gas.

Ideally, you won't need any throttle when you shift. However, if you're struggling with dropping below the rev range (watch the tach as you shift, it'll jump up and the car will lurch as the gear engages), you may want to VERY lightly throttle up as you shift.

The throttle on the 8 is very sensitive, so it only needs a very (very!) light touch. My guess is you're just putting your foot into the throttle a bit too hard.

I had a bit of free time today so I went out on the back roads around my area and really practiced shifting and I think I have it pretty much down now. What was said about giving it gas before I let off the clutch is what I was doing wrong. Thanks for the replies everyone.
