question about that red thingymabober

I have a question concerning that red thing that's in the rotary crest in the back bumper region of the japanese RX8. What is it, what does it do, and where can I obtain one?

btw...i'm new here and I don't own an RX8. I have been following this forum very closely for the past many months and i'm very interested in purchasing an RX8 sometime around Spring of next year. Mazda of Santa Monica has a red rx8 in for test drive if anyone is interested...if anyone lives around that area. So, nice to meet everyone here.

Oh yeah, I know there's another member with the sig of "Gyro". I'm letting you know that i'm not trying to rip off your sig, it's just that I've been using this sig for the past 9 years. Thanx for understanding :)

Its the rear fog light.

Standard on J-spec and Euro cars.

You can probably get it but I doubt the U.S. cars have the wiring in place to power it...

Sweet, thx!

Anyone check yet to see if the wires are there? :p

There's a slot in the fuse box labeled rear fog, and a small hole in in the rear diffuser to run the wire, but no wiring to that location, as far as I can tell (US spec car). Haven't checked the rear light clusters for an unused set of leads though.

Thanks for that bit of info Gamera. I look forward to any other information you (or anyone else) can provide regarding installation possibilities of the rear fog light.

Just for the record it's not standard on J-spec cars...it's an option that you can get (in various colours I believe).

I am thinking about wiring one of these in when I get my car even if it means having a friend from Europe send me the parts, but what I want to know is where is the switch for this function on the dash? Is it a part of the regular light switch or is it a separate switch?

If there is a slot in the fuse box, then I would think that wiring it would not be that big of a deal, although I would expect to have to yank out a certain amount of the interior trimto fisht the wiring.

Just curious if any of the Japanese guys would know where that switch is.

TIA -

Well, that answers that now doesn't it. Seems like a pretty complete set, but I'll be damned if I'm buying accessories before I get the car!!!

I still wonder where the switch is in the factory set up since I won't be able to see that on this continent. Anybody know?

it is on the rotating sleeve of the turn signal stalk. the first position turns on the front fog lights, the next position turns on the rear fog lights.

Australian RX-8's get front fog lights but no rear fog lights.

Thanks, that's what I figured, and I also figure that any after factory installed set up would have the switch on a rocker in the dash somewhere although who knows. My preference is to always install accessories in a factory way, but I want this option. I have spent too many white knuckle drives in fog and heavy rain worrying about getting rear ended and driving faster than I would like to try to keep ahead of the traffic.

Thanks for the information.
