Question about KEYS

So I just bought a 05 RX8 and I recieved a key and a remote. They are both aftermarket. The remote wasnt working when i got it so i changed out the battery and still doesnt work.

Now here comes the questions. Do i need to reprogram the remote? Now if the remote doesnt work what do i buy?? I have seen many different post about that can buy the switchblade keys and then have them cut the key and then have a dealer reprogram. Then saw you buy it and have someone cut it then you can program your self.

Any direct answers would be great before I but the key fob.

I assume you have the key chain OEM FOB? It may only be programmed by the dealer's M-MDS(Mazda Modular Diagnostic System), I believe. Of all the members who attempted to reprogram the key chain FOB, I've only read one documented case who've had success with it. That is why most opted with the switchblade instead of trying to reprogram and reprogram that FOB. It happened to many members when the FOB battery started to die down, after replacing it with a new battery the FOB seemed to stop working. But, if you ever consider the switchblade key FOB, refer to the last page of the 'switch-blade' key on an 04 thread for programming instructions.

That's the programming instructions for the switchblade FOB, I've posted that in a thread I have linked above.

Well with all that said I would like the switchbkade key fob. Can I buy any 4 button on made for the rx8 tjen have someone cut it then program it or take to dealer to program? Thanks in advance

If you go to the dealer, give them your VIN and I think it is $195 cut and programmed. Read the thread I have linked and you will find all the info you need if you decide to do the purchase and programming yourself.

As stated in the quote below; yes sir, it will work. Good find, that's very cheap for a set of uncut key and FOB. Unfortunately, you will need two working keys to program the new one.

See theres the problem. I got a key and a non working remote when i bought my car. Thats it.

Grace_Excel 11-20-2012 01:50 AM

Yep, that cut key will only be an emergency key to open the locks; however, you can still ask the locksmith if he/she can program the key for you. Some have had success; nevertheless, you will now have a switchblade-keyless entry FOB that works. Battery will be the same as your key chain FOB.

But i can get that key programed at the dealer??

Grace_Excel 11-20-2012 07:32 PM

I am not sure how much it will cost you. Inquire with them; but I do know that if you buy the key through the dealer, it will come cut and the transponder will be programmed. You can perform the FOB yourself.

i lost my key and i only had one. do i have to get it towed to teh dealership for them to cut and program a key i bought off ebay?

Grace_Excel 11-20-2012 08:23 PM

Call the dealer first. They do not cut they keys, I know you can give them the VIN to order the key with the programmed transponder, the car may have to be physically there once the key arrives.
