Question About Coilovers & Gas Smell In Oil

Alright, so I'll tackle my two questions one at a time.

Firstly, my right front shock when bad and the dealer said it's my fault so they won't replace it. I have 20K miles on the car and baby the shit out it! Whatever though, since I've wanted coilovers since I got the car. Anyway, I want to install them myself but I can't find any threads showing or talking about installation. So, I'm just curious if anyone knows of any threads/'How To's' or knows of a website detailing the install. I don't want to pay $500 dollars for the install, if I could pay $100 just to get them set-up after they're on.

Secondly, my oil dipstick smells of gas. As far as my research on here has led me to believe, it is normal and not a problem. Some people think it foreshadows a potential flooding problem, but no significant proof. So I just want to double check, is it normal or should I be worried?

Thanks!

Never fear, Jedi is here...

odd that they won't warranty a blown strut on a car with only 20,000 miles on it but if you're going with coilovers, then I would check out the D.I.Y. subforum.

Series I DIY subforum with relevant posts organized alphabetically and by subjects. Start at post #11 https://www.rx8club.com/series-i-do-yourself-forum-73/diy-section-category-alphabetically-101998/

Here's a coilover install DIY that people have used in the past: http://www.swankmonkey.com/mazda/rx8...ion/coilovers/

I realize your car is a 2009 but most of that should still be relevant for what you're looking to do.

As for the smell: not sure I've ever smelled my dipstick so can't really help you there.
any other symptoms or just the smell?

What type of driving do you do? Short trips? How often do you change oil?

Thanks for the tutorials guys! I should be able to manage an install between them.

As for the gasoline scented dipstick issue, I found this crazy old thread: https://www.rx8club.com/rx-8-discussion-3/if-your-oil-dipstick-smells-like-gas-21416/

On average, I do about half highway and half city in my daily commute which is about 30 miles maybe, round trip. I redline it and take turns like a crazy man, but I don't run it hot or just sit there bouncing off the limiter. I even baby it when it's cold.

On a side note, is there anywhere I can go to complain about the fact that my dealer won't give me a new shock?

They literally said that suspension is wear and tear, and that replacing it under warranty becomes difficult because many people abuse their cars. Then they said it was probably a pothole since I live in a city full of them and that counts as damage on my behalf and I need to talk to my insurance.

^ Too many potholes!? Wouldn't live were you live :(

I live in Richmond, Virginia. We don't have that many potholes, especially since they're repaving basically everything.
