Except that when you pop the clutch, it's a good way to get the rear wheels to lock up and possibly lose the rear end. Sorry, I am not trying to sound like a father, I just don't want to see a nice car or fellow RX-8 driver smashed up. Or I guess any person for that matter.

...or, I could shoot a flame out the exhaust large enough to engluf a flock of Spotted Owls soaked in gasoline, flying nearby. Lots of 'could happens'. It's not realistic to me, however. I'm trying to communicate as if I am appreciative of your warnings, no offense intended. If it helps, I'm 32, and have been driving since age 15. I think I got it down - the proceedure. :D


It's really not that big of a deal - to compression start a car. Frankly, I'm more scared to 'jump start' a car off another car's battery.

Alright, we agree on the fear of jump starting a car. And if you do ever learn how to shoot flames that big out of your exhaust, at least post some photos.

I think cautious is a better term.

Ok, I can't believe you people that are putting this down have either:

a) never heard of this, or

b) are afraid to try this.

I use to do this to my 92 ranger every time the battery ran down. It now has 315,000 miles on it. Have you ever seen a racecar stall out in the pits. When the guys are pushing the car out after a stall, what do you think they're doing?

a). just replace the battery

b). RX8 is not a racecar :p

Racecar drivers and owners aren't usually all that concerned about long turn durability. They are more concerned with the short term

Ahhhh, "Flinstoning it" I remember that well from my college days.
You see, I had this Datsun 310 GX hatchback. It really was a good car for the most part. Great for a college student in 1986-1989, anyway.
I really had a lot of good times with that car. One day, the starter started not working each time I attempted to start it with the key. I could roll down the hill, pop the clutch (I used first then, actually) and away I went.
One COLD night, it took several times to get it to start, and I had to have a co-worker steer it while I pushed it up another hill to try to start it. He commented on how I was having to "Flinstone it" all the time.
I heard from another friend that had a 310gx that it was common for the starter switch in the ignition to go bad. He went to the local auto parts store and bought a momentary on-off switch andinstalled it in his car to take the place of his key starter switch. (The key still worked to turn it off.)
I didn't get it "fixed" until about 2 years later. I was worried that it would cost a fortune to get it repaired. (silly poor college student me) I think it cost less than 30 bucks

Compression starting doesn't create measurable 'more' wear on the engine than normal starting would - unless somebody could point me to data to suggest otherwise.

You mean to tell me that if it was midnight, and you can't get anyone on the phone to come help you, and the nearest store is miles away, not to mention closed since it's midnight, you wouldn't even try to push start your car? You would just sit there and wait for someone to come looking for you? There is no situation that bring you to try to push start your car?
