Problems About The Rx-8 !?

Hi folks, the RX-7 used to be my dream car when I was in school now I have a job and just absolutely love the RX-8. But i got a few worries about the car thats stopping me from picking up the phone and taking it up on the sellers offer rite now.

My number 1 worry about the car is its horrific reputation for winter snow driving. Are there any Canadian RX-8 owners out there that could share a few opinions on the car? How bad is it with snow tires on>??

2nd of course is gas-mileage. Ive seen a few specs on the net but want to hear it from the real owners, how many litres does the rx-8 do per 100 km for both auto and manual?

3rd I worry about theft and vandalism b./c i live in an apt now with outdoor parking.

also, how many kms should i change the engine oil? anything i should watch out particularly for maintaining the rotary engine??

I also heard a few complains about the battery and engine and even the transmission.

Any help to clear any of these doubts is much appreciated guys!

hey wassup!!!

well one...the shouldent be really bad in the snow if you have snow tires on it...with amazing handling the car has, you should be fine jus keep the traction control on lol....gas mileage is not bad.i travel long distances from school and work and really dont have a problem with the gas...my only advise is treat the car with some respect on the street.if you have your r.p.m needle seeing 8,000 all day then yes your goin to have a problem, this car eats gas if you speed but if you respect it then your fine trust me....finally the theft siuation...well jus have a club on it or get a nice alarm...im in a area where they steal some cars but im fine...this car is a blast to drive man....im am so hooked its not even funny......you'll regret it if you pass this up.well i hope this information helps a lil take care and drive safe

are you serious? or do you even own an 8?
i can only agree that driving in snow isn't too bad when you have snow tires.

now for the real answers.
- Driving in the snow from a stop can cause your tires to slip. Turn OFF your traction control (DSC) because it will fight you during acceleration. Then feel free to turn it back on.

- Gas mileage is not bad unless you used to own an SUV or a Ferrari. I do not agree that 19 mpg is not bad. But it is better than 16mpg that other 8 owners here have.

- If you want your engine to last, you better spin that sucker to 9000 at least once a day.

- Your car will garner attention, most likely in the key, egg, or even ketchup fashion. Most owners keep the stock head unit so at least THAT deters theft. Use common sense and hide your accessories.

the oil thing.
- Check or top off your oil every 2 weeks at the latest. This engine is designed to burn oil.

And I didn't even have to tell you to use the Search function.

Problems About The Rx-8 !?

We have less problems than RX-7's do. On that you should be ok.

no need to whip out your penis, bro. i'm just adding my input to your statements that may contradict the general census here. sorry if i came off too harsh.

i forgot to add that I also agree the 8 is a blast to drive!

xsnipersgox 07-15-2008 11:46 PM

i am sure u can't out drive him, and i am sure u don't know ur car as well as the rest of us do.

My Penis is to big to whip out. It must be pulled out ;)

ShinkaTeen 07-16-2008 12:48 AM

......^..yeah pulled out of your ass.

hahahhahaa j/k couldnt resist.

buttt ummmmm too answer ur question... if u drive like 55-65 assuming highway..

some people have reported 29 mpg at 55 in 6th.

and like 27 mpg at 65 highway in 6th.

ive tested my 8 on highway and i went 55-65 and drafted behind a truck and the 8 has these little dots on it. and ionly wasted 1 dot going on a like 23-26 mile trip.

then drove back going like 80-100 and wasted 4 dots.

i left the house with my gas light on wiht only 2 dots left.

got to my destination filled up with 5 bucks. dot went away came back home on E.

think about it.

its not that accurate but its obvious if u drive it hard ALL the time. ur gonna get crappy mpg.

some may say my statement is retarded and i should go hump a cow, but im just basing off my own little experiment.

and as for snow idk..... it doesnt snow here.

it is AMAZING to drive especially on the mountain.

problems? just keep up on oil changes , and check ur oil.

redline a day keep the carbon away.

i redline 1ce a day.

p.s use 91 octane or higher please. : ]

DOMINION 07-16-2008 04:24 AM

Get a good pair of snow tires, you'll be fine if you aren't stupid.

2nd of course is gas-mileage. Ive seen a few specs on the net but want to hear it from the real owners, how many litres does the rx-8 do per 100 km for both auto and manual?
I get 16-18 MPG. I get 20 on long highway trips. You figure out of thats too thirsty for you. it's a personal choice.

3rd I worry about theft and vandalism b./c i live in an apt now with outdoor parking.
Vandals will fuck up any car. Thieves usually leave 8's alone because theres no market for rx-8 parts. iPod mounts, radar detectors, iPods, cell phones on the other hand.... Just leave nothing visible in your car.

also, how many kms should i change the engine oil? anything i should watch out particularly for maintaining the rotary engine??
Every 3000 miles. Check your oil level once a week and top off as needed.

I also heard a few complains about the battery and engine and even the transmission.
Transmission doesn't like to be abused, and the syncros are a bit weak. Not a big deal. Engines need to be exercised throughout their entire rev range, and enjoy lots of wide open throttle. Several members here have over 100K miles on their engine with no problems. It's a sports car. It's going to cost more to maintain. You may end up needing an engine or transmission. So it goes with sports cars.
