power shifting
has anyone tried power shifting? I did it once for today. I did it at 3 rpms, actually the little line after the 3 and it went out smoothly and into the other gear as if the clutch was in. Has anyone tried this? I found it difficult to power shift from 1st to 2nd but from 2nd to the rest of the gear its ok.

Yeah, if you're just shifting without using that clutch that is not powershifting, I think one would call that abuse...

My understanding, is shifting fast as in racing is just shifting fast. Power shifting is when you don't rev match going up the gears (i.e., you spin a little (damn I can't think of the exact term, scratch?? or something, squeek??, oh well)). Speed shifting is when you take the car out of gear and into a higher gear WITHOUT clutching. It's usually very hard to match the rpm to do it properly from first to second. I have not tried in in my 8, but in my camaro 3rd to 4th was really easy, I would pull back slighty to disengage 3rd and then a short time 1/4 sec? later push gently into 4th. Absolutely no grinding. Money shifting is when you down shift with the revs so high that the engine must speed up even with out adding additional gas via the pedal. Money shifting is so called that because many times it will cost you your engine. No one money shifts on purpose.
I'm out of shifting terms, anybody know of any more? Edit: chirp is the term I was thinking of, you can get a very nice chirp from 1st to 2nd, have not tried to chirp from higher gears yet. |

Are you telling me you forced your tranny into gear without using the clutch? At 3000 rpm it may be possible if you rev match, I used to do it in my '84 RX-7, but when drag racing at high rpm something is going to break! Yes, powershifting is when you dip the clutch real fast and never lifting off the gas during a gear change....haven't done it in my RX8, but in my old AE86 it really made car feel a lot faster....lot's o' fun that Corolla...... |

Hey Ike....it's funny, I researched the thought of swapping a Legacy Turbo 2.5 into it...I knew where I could have gotten one cheap, but I didn't have the patience and Subie-know how to pull it off. So I just modded the stock 4AGE....

The Rotaries, Nissan SR20DET's, even Mitsu Starion 2.6 Turbo's.....Most people keep them Toyota powered. They update them with the later 4AGE 20 valves, or go FI with the factory Supercharged 4AGZE's, or Turbo the GZE's without the SC. The MR2 3SGTE is an awesome motor, and can be done, but it takes a lot of money to do it.
|
I always loved the Starion and Conquest, very cool cars for their time. Someone in my area owns a mint Conquest and still looks great by todays standards. Is the 3SGTE the supercharged MR2 engine?

Turbo MR2 motor...2 liters. 3SGTE. The earlier MR2's with the blowers were 4AGZE's. Basically the same as the stock NA 4AGE in the base MR2 and AE86 of the time, but with a little beefed up bottom end and the roots type blower.

I have a friend who is working on importing JDM front(well rear in the case of the MR2) clips. He has himself swapped entire JDM later model SW20 clips into T-top-less NA US SW21 models. So if you can't really find a turbo MR2, the NA is easier to find, and more desireable without the weighty and flexy T-top body. Then get a JDM rear clip(the later models have 247hp, compared to the 200hp we got).
