Potentially buying an RX8

Hi everyone!

I'm looking into buying a 2005 RX8 as my first car. I had a few questions.

1) How is the insurance? I know it's classified as a 4 door sedan. I have never gotten a ticket or crashed and I'm 20 years old.

2) How much money a month/year is maintainence? I know all the oil consumption is high.

3) would you guys recommend the RX8? I make about 800 dollars a month.I did some calculations and I came up with about 450 dollars a month including the loan, gas, maintainance, and insurance. Could I support this car without using ALL my money.

4) I know the RX8 is unique but are there any other cars that are this awesome in this price range?

Thanks for your input!

If you only make $800.00 a month stay far away from the RX-8.

+a million^ your car is an older one needing some form of maintenance and it's running out of warranty before you probably pay it off so don't do it.

No need to be mean to him, he's just excited about the 8. Nothing wrong with that and all of us wanted cars out of our league at that age.

That would probably cover it just barely enough to get by. Maintenance parts are not cheap. And the labor is even more provided you don't do it yourself. You need to be able to save up for things as they come. Keep in mind you should be using Premium gasoline (the price they dont display huge on the sign next to the station). And not to mention you need to consider our fuel economy is less than spectacular. Think V8 muscle car gas mileage. I say go for it. You only live once. When I was 20 I had a 13 year old VW Jetta. Not cool. RX8s are cool.

Yea but for a first car you should ALWAYS have a beater, or at least a car you don't care much about. There is just to much new drivers do not know about driving IMO. Even if the new driver doesn't make the first mistake they can make the second one by not avoiding an accident properly or whatever may be happening.

My first car was a 86 supra that my family bought for $1100 from the neighbors. Learned to drive on that and had no worries at all about crashing it. I could have probably got half of what I originally paid for it at a scrap yard at that time lol.

Easy for you to say...lol

Take it from someone who bought his nearly a year ago when I was making just above minimum wage.
Lol. If you want to have money for anything else, including gasoline, don't buy this car. I found out the hard way that you must at some point budget for an engine replacement.

Buy a Civic. Brah.

$800 a month....unless you live 1 -2 miles away from everything you'll have to live off PB&J and Ramen noodles just to put gas in it.

Spending more than half of your income on a car is not a good idea.

When I was 20-ish, I bought a brand new Eagle Talon Turbo. The car was a blast, but the cost (compared to my income) made my life near miserable. Learn from my mistake.

I agree with basically all of these guys. Buying a RX-8 with that income is not a good idea. Get a new job, or get a different car. It's a fun car and all, but wait until you have the proper means to get one. I'd say get a Honda. They're fun, cheap, and easy on gas.

You must be my brother from another mother...Although mine wasn't an Eagle Talon, it was a ... Fiero. Hey, at least it was the v6...

I actually really loved that car, but the $300/month insurance on it really killed me. Ate nothing but Ramen noodles and drank water.

Those were the days...
