Post shutdown fan???

I've had the car for almost a week and absolutely love it!!! I know some folks have mentioned that after turning off the car the fan runs for sometime. Mine does this, however it seems to be completely random as to when it occurs. For example the past two days after driving home from work, the outside temperature was the same, similar drive conditions, the fan came on the first day and did not come on the second day after shutting down. Any thoughts or input would be greatly appreciated.

It has little to do with ambient outside temperature. The thermosensor triggers the fans based on coolant temp and engine load if driving(i.e. A/C, etc.).
:)

I've noticed the same thing. It was 101 today, and the fan didn't come on as usual. Maybe it takes a little while for the temp to rise after you shut it off, and I leave the garage and don't notice it. However, sometimes the fan comes on as soon as I shut off the car. I'd like to hear some more experiences too.

Same here - sometimes doesn't come on right away. I don't think it's anything to worry about.

Well, you are not alone. I experienced that as well which I've mentioned in this thread. With all the feedbacks, I'm not worrying about it right now. But if the battery every die, then that will be a different story.

Thanks for the reasurrance, I'm still not totally comfortable with the fact it comes on so randomly understanding that it is triggered by the thermostat, however it seems to me that under similar driving circumstances and engine load the fan should be triggered consistently. Oh well... it doesn't sound like I should lose any sleep over it:cool:

On our rally in the mountians of San Diego all 5 of the RX-8's were subjected to the same steep climb and 93 degree temps, yet when we stopped to take pictures at the top, my car was the only one with the fan going. And it stayed on for a very long time. What's up with that?

mikeb 07-29-2003 08:19 PM

The first day I drove mine the fan would go on and off often. But, I'm happy it seems to be normal

RX8-U-UP 07-29-2003 08:38 PM

The owners manual says that once the sensor turns the fan on, it will stay on for approximately 10 minutes. I have noticed that if I turn the key back to on, without starting the car, and then back off, it will reset the fan and turn it off. I don't think this is necessarily good, I did it by accident. Don't think its anything to worry about, unless you do something to prematurely turn it off, like I did by accident.

It's also possible that the fans had been running for the last few minutes before you arrived home, and thus did not need to come on again after you shut down.

Ah hah! I hadn't considered that. I had assumed the fan only worked when the engine had shut down.

Napboy 07-29-2003 11:22 PM

I don't know if this helps, but after having the car for 5 days now, the fan no longer comes on after shut off. This could be due to cooler temps or the engine is being cooled more properly now that it's being broken in (btw, I have 300 miles now). I suspect the fan will begin running less and less after shut off.

Weird.. I got my first fan action.

I walked away from the car and was like WTH!? The car's still running! I have the keys in my hand... Am I crazy? Did I leave the A/C going.. ?!?

So I sat there and waited until it stopped.. It took a while.. a good 2-3 minutes. Panicked me for a bit, I thought if it don't turn off, wont it kill the batt? Hmmmm

So I came to the forum to see if it was normal, and I guess it is.. I guess because it was rather loud, it shocks you.. Weird..

94-95 RX-7's did the same thing, nothing to worry about.

(93's didn't)

Is there a post shutdown coolant pump?

Can you feel any air coming out of the fender air outlets?

My fan did this for the first time today, and thank god I remembered this thread because it startled the heck out of me. I took the key out of the ignition, and the fan started up. Could it be any louder, you think? Had me completely freaked out for a few minutes.

Wolfer 08-21-2003 10:24 PM

I've only had the fan come on 2 times after I stopped the car. You can feel the heat coming out of the side vents. I just stood there thinking how neat it will be when its cold outside and you can see the steam coming out the sides when you stop. But since it'll be dry heat I guess you won't see anything.

loco4rx8 08-21-2003 10:34 PM

I've never heard the fan come on. Had the car for a week now with over 500 miles on it. I want to hear the fan too!! :p

It's common .... nothing to worry about. I get it all the time

Fan going waco! while driving

OK, I found this thread and thought it might be appropriate to post my question here, thus leaving a consistent trail of information on a single place. Here is what happened:

I was driving from work to school last evening. Avg speed 35mph, temp: 90ºF, traffic was not so heavy but there were some stop-n-go situations, and the AC was on 1 (recirculate) front vents.

I noticed after turning the stereo off, that the engine fan was going on for a couple seconds, then off, on...then off. All the way until I parked the car.....and the fan didn't come on.

OK, now....my speculations an fears:

1. Could it have been the AC compressor turning on and off ??...I could hear a 'realy' switch sound everytime there was a fan off / on. However that would not explain the 'fan' noise.

2. Is it common for the engine fan to come on/off several times in a lapse of 20 seconds??

3. Ahhh....yes, is it normal? have any of you noticed it?

4. Please tell me everything is alright! and I'll send you a Xmas present (well, maybe just a postcard!)

Thanks!
M.-
