Question Possibly buying an 06 RX-8 - advice and input please?

Hey guys. I'm new to the boards, and have basically been browsing trying to see if I can see if this is the car for me.

As far as the car I'm looking at goes:

06 RX-8
GT Package (Leather seats, 18'' wheels, rear spoiler, sunroof, Bose System, etc)
7k miles
Warranty till 09, or 45k miles
No nav

$22,000

What do you guys think? Ive been reading about engine's dying in the 30k mileage range? Any input will be highly valued. Thanks in advance everyone

welcome to the club! I'm glad you've been doing some browsing, that should prepare you for all the "quirks" of owning an 8.

I suggest taking a look at the Purchasing, Financing, Forum that we have set up here. I believe there's a post where people are listing their closing price. That might help you guage the price a little better.
(just keep in mind that some of those numbers might be a bit exaggerated by people)

oh boy... as for the engines dying comment. Don't worry about that too much. Have there been some engines replaced? YES.
Is it very common? NO.

Sounds great. Thanks a lot for the quick responses. As far as the searching goes, is there any nooby threads where people like me get all their basic info?

why would you only have warranty till 45k miles? It's 50k regular and 60k powertrain after the recall.

I have no idea, but he told me warranty until 45k...? I guess I will ask him about it and get back to you.

my guess is you're buying froma dealership that's not a Mazda dealership? (maybe someone traded it in?) Maybe that's why they're not familiar with the mazda warranties?

Check to see if they've performed the recalls on it.

I Love This Car!

My sister has an RX-8, and since I am installing the audiolink in her car this weekend, I have it for today and this weekend.

This car is an absolute blast to drive. This car is a compromise (tight interior, reliability, fuel economy) but I think it would be worth it for you. It handles like a true sports car, and as long as you keep the revs up, has plenty of power. The shift action is really great as well. On a subjective level, it is hard to say how this car compares to others, because it isnt really fast, nor does it have tremendous cornering grip. But it just has that feel, and the fun factor that cant really be put into words.

A little over a year ago, I was looking as well and noticed the dealership where I got mine had several previous year models with about the same amount of mileage on them. After doing a lot of research, I personally felt I was better off getting a brand new one.

I was wary of exactly WHY these barely used cars were being sold again, and not so much because they had problems, but not knowing how the people drove them. No matter how you look at it, it's evident the simple truth of the matter is, if someone is getting rid of their car with only 7,000 miles on it, they didn't know what they were getting into. Sure, their situations may have changed, but gosh... The number of posts you read about people complaining to have to add oil, the bad fuel economy, etc.

Getting a car that's subsequently not broken in and maintained appropriately is akin to adopting a four year old who's been raised by wolves and not being privy to this fact.

If you enjoy 16mpg, mediocre performance, and nasty wheel hop when you get on it off the line..go for it.

ohh.. and don't bother taking it camping or driving far from home-- if it floods (and it will, mine still "floods" after all the TSBs every couple of months)... because when it does flood, it takes a few battery-charges to get it started again.... HIGHLY unreliable in that respect.

Other than a few plastic pieces breaking on the dash... its not a bad car :-(

...Anyone wanna trade their STI for my RX-8??

My sis never had hers flood. And as for wheel hop, dont complain; try my CTS-V. Then you will know wheelhop.

Actually most of the RWD cars on the market these days suffer from some level of wheel hop. The only cure really is tires with less traction. Or modify the suspension.

i dont know what you guys are talking about, i dont get wheel hop off the line. either its smoothly burnt rubber or straight acceleration.

anyone that sells their car with 7k miles on it for whatever reason is good news to me. the couple that owned my rx8 had an oops baby. sucks for them, but hey, awesome for me.

22k for that rx8? sounds good, i'd take it.

He's probably been reading it right here.

I've spent more time here than I should have in the 11 months I've owned Zoomy. I think I've got a good feel for what's been posted. There have posts about blown engines at every mileage. Seems random. Virtually all of them end with Mazda covering it.

Calibrating for Internetese, not a frequent enough event for me to worry about. Especially when countered with reports of high mileage 8s with no problems.

Ask private party why he/she is turning it loose - this car is usually a keeper
If it is can't keep up payments - then Car is OK
If it is something wrong - find out what - and make sure it is fixed!
If person has to ship to Iraq - car fine
If person got too many tickets - fine- but don't make the same mistake!
You cannot drive this car drunk!

You will love it - it will spoil you, but beware of mice - fire wall made of mouse candy

Ours is now over 1 yr - trouble free - just replaced the tires cause we wore them to belts!
