Plastic piece broke off from E-Brake

The bottom piece of my e-brake is broken. It is the piece that goes into the housing when you put your e-brake down.

My car is 10 months old... dealer said it is not part of the warranty.

What do you guys think?

He told me because it is broken, and not cover under warranty.

It will cost me around $330 (include labour) to fix. The whole handle is connected to the broken section, therefore whole section has to be replace.

Basically when my e-brake is up, I see inside thru the hole.

Thanks

Mine has been broken for years... I've learned just to deal with it.
Its just an aesthetic piece... you'll forget about it after awhile.

kenken3686 03-07-2011 02:03 PM

But I can't accept the fact that this isn't cover under the warranty.

To me, it means defective parts or installation. It is still a new car...

You know that the entire rubber ebrake handle is removable right? Its just a rubber cover that goes over the mechanical ebrake handle. Slides right out. I dont understand why in gods name it would cost you 300+labor

kenken3686 03-07-2011 03:26 PM

It is not the top part that we hold on to.

It is the soft plastic piece that goes into the house when dropped down.

I have the parts break down with me, from the handle to the broken piece is ONE piece.

And because I have a R3, it costs more due to the red stitching.

To be honest, I don't understand why it is so expensive...

Do you mind taking a picture, I have the sport so that might be why i cant really picture it in my head.

Shnifty 03-07-2011 03:32 PM

mine has been broken off since I got it several years ago.

kenken3686 03-07-2011 03:35 PM

Yes, as soon as I get off work. I will take the pictures on the way home.

It's a common problem with all rx8s (series 1 for sure)
I went to look at 7+ rx8s before I settled on the one I picked and they all had that broken trim piece.
Including the one I bought.

The whole unit will slide off. They just charge a lot for labor. Mine has been broken off for years as well.
He's talking about the front rubber/plastic flap that hides the inside of the center console when the e-brake is up. If it brakes off the only time you see it is in the passenger seat.

I'm almost positive he is referring to this...

Mine is about to go... I just got a new e-brake handle off another member's part out to put on once it snaps off completely... But it wont hurt anything to not have that part there if you don't feel like dealing with it...

What happens is that when it gets cold outside that part gets really stiff, so when you pull the brake it bends it and puts pressure on it until it eventually snaps.

Yea thats what i figured he was talking about, I was gunna suggest he just stay on the lookout for a partout as well. Heck if he really wants to spend 300 just buy the autoexe one lol

xexok 03-07-2011 05:06 PM

It must have to get VERY cold for that to happen. That part seems super flexible to me I just went out and messed with mine.

kenken3686 03-07-2011 05:19 PM

Yes that is exactly that part that broke off. Thanks for bringing the picture. Well I am not going to replace now, really not worth the money!

jasonrxeight 03-07-2011 05:23 PM

never noticed on mine. the handbrake is down most the time.

monchie 03-07-2011 05:41 PM

I never noticed that either :scratchhe

I'm about to take a look at it right now...see ya later.

Domenico 03-07-2011 07:05 PM

yeah I noticed mine was gone few months after i got the car

kenken3686 03-07-2011 07:17 PM

Can someone give me some thoughts on the warranty part. Should it be cover?

invasion08 03-07-2011 07:21 PM

How many miles are on your car? And what is the bumper to bumper warranty that came with your car?

SayNoToPistons 03-07-2011 11:31 PM

I have thought about replacing my ebrake because I am extremely nit picky about it. It probably took me a while to notice that it is broken too. It doesnt bother me enough yet for me to remove the seat and the whole center console in order to replace it. Buying a replacement (used will do just fine for under $30) is the easy part. I will do it some day though.

Your dealership is funny.

I had mine replaced 3 TIMES all under b2b warranty.

the 3rd time, the dealership guy was "smart enough" to readjust the brake to make it shorter so it never break again.

What am I suppose to say to them?

They said "it is broken, if we tried to claim it through warranty - they will denied it anyways."

I feel a part like this should be under b2b warranty too.

My car is new from May 2010, 15,000 KM (not miles).

I think thats why some people are having issues. I look at some interior shots and see some people's ebrake stroke is sooooooo much. Mine is just a few notches before full engagement .... granted this wont be the optimum set up for those of you that drift and such, but for the street drivers there really is no reason to have a 10 click ebrake engagement lol

Lord ET 03-08-2011 08:56 AM

e-brake adjustment is one of the easiest things to do too. That's what the little cut away is for. pop it out and stick a socket in there, give it a few turns and no more ridiculous e-brake.

altspace 03-08-2011 08:54 PM

Mine was replaced under the recall.
