Petrol grade

I live in Seychelles and here the petrol grade is slightly lower than most countries.
What is the exact grade of petrol does the RX8 use?
Would the engine be damaged if that specific grade is not used?
Is there any additive that can be added to the petrol to bring up the grade?

Thank you.

93 octane is Mazdas recommended. I dont think the engine would be damaged by an 87 or 89, there are amy people on here who use it. I'm not sure about octane boosters.

california is poo. california 91 feels like oregon's 89.

It's in your owners manual, but here's what it says:

Octane Rating: "91 [(R+M)/2 method)] or above or (96 RON or above). You may use a regular unleaded fuel with an Octane Rating from 87 to 90 (91 to 95 RON) but this will slightly reduce performance. Fuel with a rating lower than 87 octane (91 RON) could cause the emission control system to lose effectiveness. It could also cause engine knocking and serious engine damage."

^ The options for me are 89 or 93. IMO, this is what causes confusion in what is needed. Obviously my fellow 8er qouting the manual is correct (duh). Read it! Love it!

There are octane boosters you can add to your fuel if 93 is not available. Not to sure how affective they are though.

You can download one off of mazdausa.com. Also, is it expensive to travel to your country? I hear some of the islands there are pretty nice.

It cost around $529 inclusive of taxes from London to Mahe.Check out airseychelles.com for more info on flight detail and seychelles.com.BTW all the islands are nice;my fav is La Digue.

How did you not get the manual - did you buy used? And, to no one in particular, what the hell doesn't someone do with a manual that it doesn't end up in the glovebox?
Anyway, good luck w/your 8!

Manuals make good bathtub reading - you laugh, you cry, you try to figure out how to turn those blue lights go on that came with the music system and you got them off but can't get them back on - by the way any suggestions on that? The buttons around the light switch don' seem to do it and the control panel by the wheel is not much help either...I can get the red and the white light but not the blue...

I don't have a RX 8 yet.The dealer here could not import it becuase he said our fuel was to low, so i needed the manual to show him the minimum octane level.

i was told that even 89 octane can damage the engine and lower MPG is this true? Only had my 8 for a few weeks so..

Only time you need the higher grade is if you knock/ping otherwise your wasting your money. Been running 87 for half a year with no issues. Just tried 93 for the 1st time. I can feel no increase in in performance at all, gas mileage seems a little down with the 93. Mazda's own manual states the car can run on 87.
