Overspray
My beautiful 2005 rx-8 touring car has paint overspray on it. I believe it is due to the city painting lines on the road. Very fine dots. Have tried solvents, agressive clay, etc. No luck. I have been told to try a steamer. Please help. Thank you in advance.

Where is the paint on?
|
The overspray
is on the hood, and right side of the car.

Take it to a body shop and have them wet sand it. As a bonus, you'll get rid of that factory paint job orange peel.
|
you can probably use lacquer thinner on them too. then buff it back to a shine when done
|
sue the city!!!
|
+1 for body shop wet sanding.
|
I used prep solvent on mine with a bug sponge and it took forever and I pressed so hard that I scratched the hell out of it, then buffed the shine back.

Pictures?
|
+1 on pics

Can't you contact the DoT and have them pay for the fix?

Agreed! I used to work at Universal Studios Florida when they were building the parking structure (prior to building Islands of Adventure).. We had epoxy overspray on our cars... I was the first to notice (btw not the "8").. I was ticked... they waited for other ppl to complain. They brought in a team of detailers to clay our cars... They saw mine and realized it was already cooked into the clear coat.. They suggested I get my car repainted. It was a back and forth battle with their "Risk Management" I gave them a quote that totaled over $2,000 and they sent me a check. The good thing.. There was a detailer that was highly recommended.. He bet me $100 he could remove the epoxy with no paint job needed. I left him the car for the whole day.. He gave it back to me looking like pure black liquid. ($100 out of pocket) Not Bad! The $2,100 check came in my name.. I ended up buying a project car which I ended up trading for a 1st Gen RX-7.. (That I sold the following summer)...:( In other words.. It wasn't your fault.. let them pay for it!!! |
Tried the wd-40
Even with an agressive clay bar, did not touch it.
Thank you to everyone who has responded. I will probably trade it for an 07. There are many here in FL with under 10K miles. I know the dealer will not evern notice. I had the Mazda Rep look at it because I was told by 2 shops it was "Paint shrinkage" under the clear coat. He was an As-----. |
Take it to a GOOD body shop.
I did colour sanding and buffing for years at several different body shops. And a GOOD shop will make it look better than new. A cheap shop will ruin your car. It looks like you have tried all the standards . . . . solvent, waxes, clay . . . . the next step is sanding. |
Wait, you get a little bit of paint on the car and it's time for a new one??
|
I would make the city pay for the repairs. At work a couple yrs ago, a company was putting a new fire supression system in our hanger, and decided to spray paint some of the paints outside near the parking lot....when it was windy out! Idiots! I get to my car (a G-35 then) and notice little red speckles in the paint. I took it up with the company, and of course they have insurance, so that paid for it. They flew a guy out from St Louis who specializes in overspray removal. All he really did was wash it, clay bar, and wax the car. It all came out and looked great.
Bottom line...don't pay for it yourself! |
Thank you
to all who replied. Just returned from the dealer. They now say the paint shrunk under the clear coat. Not over spray. They faxed the rep. an estimate to repaint the entire car. Will keep you posted if interested. Bye the way, the service manager said my 8 was the most immaculate he had seen. Loved the diamond plate floor mats. Again, thank you.

The rep tells that to everyone. lol, he just wants you to feel good over there just so they can keep the customer service up. :)

don't forget a good wax job when done.
