Overheating badly, need help!

Alrighty,

In the past few days the RX (2005, Manual, less then 70k miles) has been dangerously close to overheating. I fill the reservoir tank with half coolant, half distilled water, secure the cap and drive.
She rides fine for about 10-15 minutes, then the temp shoots up to the redline and she BLEEDS coolant from the boil-over hose on the tank.
No burning or white smoke.....

Far too scared to drive her right now so she is garage bound...

Can anyone help me out on this?

RedDream 09-04-2013 06:13 PM

Is any white smoke coming out of the exhausts?

None, she's not burning any, just boiling over.

This has happened quite a bit.

Are you experiencing something similar to this thread? All be it, more severe.

I'm currently expericing something similar to what's described in this thread except I have 2 or 3 drops of coolant splattered around the engine bay (and only when the temps get up past 210F). It appears that the top neck piece that the cap attaches to is a rather brittle component.

It WAS similar to this, then all of a sudden yesterday, she blew.
I've got a new reservoir on order as my cap is no longer sealing properly, let's see if it helps. God I hope it helps.

When I ran into a similar problem, I ended up having to replace everything to get it to return to normal. Radiator, coolant lines, thermostat, and coolant bottle with cap. From Mazmart, it's around $500ish for all of that.

I really really recommend it to anyone that has even a hint of a cooling system problem that isn't easily traceable.

Is that on your factory gauge?

and again, no mention of simply checking the fans to see if they are working.

Yes it is.

Also, both fans are working. And are running the 10 mins after shutdown.

Since there is no smell of Anti freeze, then there is no small leak, like from the overflow bottle.

Get a new thermostat and hoses.

Water pump pulley still there? mine shredded itself the other day

I had a similar problem. I would fill with coolant and when I got done driving for about 15-30 minutes id pull over and see that coolant had splattered all over my engine bay. Luckily for me it was just a cap. Hope you figure it out!!

Well I went down to the stealership and bought a new reservoir and cap. Hope this helps....

Best of luck to ya. Report back with the results, as I feel I'm gonna be headed down this same path in the not-too-distant future.

This problem is not your Coolant tank.

There is a big difference from a little splattered fluid and it boiling hot.

You need to look at your whole cooling system.

With 50/50 and no cap the boiling point should be around 226, So if the cap was bad you are still overheating.

Make sure your thermostat is working properly and Flush your radiator.
