Open-minded

I just bought an 8 a few weeks ago ('04 MT) and i'm thoroughly satisfied overall. the only problem I had was when I was driving around for a bit, I came to a stoplight (not in gear, mind you) and the car just cut off. it took 3 or 4 tries to get it going again. altogether this has happened like 4 times and idk exactly what to do. i took a look through a few threads and I'm not sure which action i should take. some say it's the fuel pump, others say the spark plugs, etc. It has a little of 73000 miles on the car.

Other than that I love the car tho :D . I wanna make it faster and do a little to the exterior to make it "Mine" but I'm not fluent with engines and parts, like at all..

i'm gonna look through more threads and i'd really appreciate any n all help

Do you know the maintenance history of the car? If you do not then minimum you should change the plugs and coils, the wires as well while your at it I suppose depending no your mileage. Fuel pump is a possibility, you might consider removing it and taking a look at the fuel filter screen. If it is clogged or dirty clean it up and see if that helps you at all.

Really though it would be helpful if you posted the mileage on your car. Have you had any other problems with it?

I don't know the maintenance history so I'd most likely go with that unless i find out what the problem really is. It has a little over 73,000mi on it but other than the before-mentioned I haven't had any other problems with it.

Sorry to tell you the bad news but your engine IS going south.

Time to check Mazda to see if you still have the extended warranty.

Ididn't wanna tell him that and was hoping the plugs and such would help it lol. If anything Mazda will have him change all that stuff before they declare it dead anyway wont they? You should go in for a compression test and see where your at.

Time to slap on a 3-rotor!

ok well that certainly puts a realistic view on things haha but it's my first 8 n I don't wanna give in that easily because the car itself is pretty interesting; worst case scenario I'll have to replace the engine?

Rotary engines are fragile and needs some tender loving care. Anyway, you might need a compression test before we go any further. If you just bought the car a few weeks ago, then you should have warranty on it (if you got warranty on it).

ok well hopefully things won't go past the before-mentioned; thanks for the advice n all

dynamho Jul 20, 2011 09:31 AM

Seriously, you should do a compression test as soon as you can.

First, give Mazda North America a call, give them your VIN, and ask if the Engine Core warranty is still there.

if it is still good, start changing plugs and coils and wires and engine air filter, do this to prevent dealership from trying to put the "blame" on the said parts.

buy official coils from one of our Vendors like Mazmart and plugs and wires. keep the boxes and receipts.

Then Take your car into the dealership and ask them to do compression test. you MIGHT have to pay for the test if it's still within Spec. but be sure to tell them that Coils, plugs, and wires are BRAND NEW. and if they say it "passed", don't just walk away, ask them to give you the EXACT numbers AT WHAT RPM. This is important.

Basically speaking anything below 6(or low 6) at 250 rpm means FAILED

get back to us ;)

You could have a gunked up SSV (secondary shutter valve) that is sticking and causing the car to choke when stopped. You may or may not get a CEL from that.

Dude. This advice is gold. Normally you need to dig around for this but nycgps gave you a freebie.
