Oops!

I'm a bit concerned. I accidentally shifted from 5th to reverse on the highway thinking I shifted to 6th. I wonder if this has happened to anyone. I usually don't release my clutch super fast and by being so, i felt a grinding as i let go of the clutch but, pressed down on it and left it in neutral until i could properly get it back into 6th. I did not drop the clutch all the way and only I myself, felt the slight grinding at the knob. My passengers didn't feel a thing.

I know it CAN'T good but did I seriously screw something up that I would eventually feel down the road? Again, right now its fine but like just a bit concerned since i'm not all that versed when it comes to mechanics.

I never knew you could go into reverse out of 5th gear. My guess is the gear didnt engage you just ground the gears a bit. I would say it should be okay. But I could be wrong......

Animagix Dec 2, 2005 12:50 PM

i might've accidentally forced the knob down as i left 5th gear.

like tigster said, i dont think you actualy got Reverse, there is a lock-out, my guess is you didnt get any gear, so it was the same as trying to put the car into 6th gear with no clutch....Grrrrrrr

i think you will be fine i don't think you could make it into reverse going that fast.that why when my wife drives the 8 she never uses 6 gear.

phew, you guys rock. thanks!

khtm Dec 2, 2005 01:18 PM

Yep, it's impossible to shift into reverse while driving forward. I think the manual even states this.

dmorales Dec 2, 2005 01:59 PM

It's hard to get into reverse when sitting stopped in neutral! Much less while driving in 5th!

your car is doomed, you prolly broke the internals of the entire transmission, this is a very common problem, and mazda is aware of it and is NOT covering it under warranty since it is user error.

everything i just said i made up. Now, un-clench your butthole and continue on your regularly schedule programming. :D

MrJynx Dec 2, 2005 03:15 PM

yea it's not possible to shift from 5 -> reverse, or even getting into 1st gear..

now, 5th gear -> 2nd gear is possible.. now that's scary, heheh (oops)

I've gone into 2nd at well over a hundred trying to downgear into 4th.... the tach will go WAY past 10K..... but I don't think you can go into reverse at all after about 25-30 mph. too much posititve lockout on the synchro's

Gotta give credit to those crazy Germans and all the little things they think of in their car designs- since most of their cars place reverse gear to the left of 1st gear. (There's no ever possible danger of accidentally shifting into reverse at high speeds that way.)

josh989 Dec 2, 2005 05:12 PM

i've done it a few times, everything still working fine. usually happens when i shift from 2nd to 6th, accidentally push the stick down a bit. Just let it up and try again.

Yeah, I have to confess I'm coming around to the German way of thinking on that...
