I dont know why when i saw the pic my laugh just burst out

U can use a filter cap, extension, ratchet and it will pop it loose.

if all else fails get a screwdriver and puncture the filter. You should be able to generate enough torque to remove it.

All you need is a stronger hand to do it, like mine. ;)

Like this.

Go to parts store and get a cap with extension socket welded on top if they make.

If just an extension square hole, put tube rubber between cap and filter, since the extension can hit filter before the cap.

If you google "oil filter wrench" and slect "images", you'll get a view of every kind of filter wrench in the world. The see if you can find one of the ones that takes a socket handle and tightens as you turn it. My favorite is the strap type that takes a 3/8" drive. The ones that have jaws are also good.

Cap type filter wrenches have the same problem as a box wrench on a stripped nut - they slip and don't really bite down.

I had this happen once. I picked up a wrench from Sears which clamps as you turn. worked like a charm.

Yeah, I turn green when I get mad if I cannot turn the oil filter to take it out...lol

misiekm 08-28-2012 11:38 PM

yeah i used everything that was available. the problem with some of the wrenches is that theres not enough space to put the wrench in and turn it. Maybe you guys got some advice how to make that work ???

While the other posters are trying to be helpful, their advice is not helping you.

I would do this.
Try every oil filter wrench out there. I would ask friends to see which ones they have.
If that did not work, I would go to different stores, ie Sears, Wally World, AutoZone and buy what they have. Heck even more than one type,

I would return whatever did not work and they them that it did not work. I would even complain that the tool sucks. Being an old man gives me the right to be gripey. I tell them I have lived to an age that gives me that right. Most just look at me and laugh.

Like I have 12 different types. Why you ask?
Cause the filter on my MX-3 is too small, most oil filter wrenches just SPIN.

Some of them, while good, like the one that tightens when you turn it, they just do not fit the
small space around the filter.

Most CAP with a socket square on top just spin. I have even put different stuff inside the cap before putting in on top of the filter, ie cloths, paper, etc anything to make the wrench not spin but bite.

Some of the ones like the Sears pictured above, does not close enough, ie it is still too small
for my MX-3 filter.

So I learned which filter NOT to buy
I normally buy the least expensive oil filters when they go on sale at Wally World.
The Tech brand.

The screwdriver method works the best BUT
1. It can get messy..ie oil all over the place..if you do not drain it well before using the screwdriver. Make sure you use a large, thick screwdriver such that you can get goo torque.

2. Make sure you have a new oil filter cause after you put that screwdriver in the oil filter
the oil filter is no good, ie will not be able to drive the car until you replace the oil filter.

Being an old man, 64 last week, I forget which oil filter wrench I used last time.

Good luck

monchie, only reason you have stronger hands is you
have years of experience.
You have played with yourself for many years.

I have always preferred this style of wrench. Buy Performance Tools Standard Filter Wrench W54050 at Advance Auto Parts
It gets tighter as you torque it and there are usually 3 sizes. The smallest one works well on an 8. As a former mechanic I had to deal with stuff after customers tried to do things themselves all the time.

Myardor 08-29-2012 09:39 PM

Another thought
You can take it back to the first place you took it.
AND
Nicely ask the manager if he can have it loosen, since it was them that put it that tight
He might just do that for free. who knows.
