oil dip stick and premix question
 

first off how do i read the oil dip stick, and what one is it, the yellow metal ring or the rubber handled one next to the oil cap.

second premix is only for track racing and such not for everyday driving right?

If you are standing, looking at the front of your car the dip stick is on the right of the engine, the yellow ring.

Personally I alway use premix, I am not exact about my measure ment I add a good blob, which is probably about a table spoon. I share the car with my wife and I can tell when she has filled the car and not added the premix. It make the car rev a lot smoother and sound less harsh. Try it just by some 2 stroke oil its really cheap.

u add the 2 stroke oil to ur gas or oil?

How do you read a dip stick? You bought an RX8?

i know how to read a normal on but ive heard the rx8 are set up differently to show how much oil to add like half a qt and such by like bumps on the stick. im sry of i offended ur intelligence by asking a dumb question, i would rather be safe then sorry

Your premix goes into the gas tank. You should add the oil before the fuel, so that it has a good chance to mix together. Most people agree that 0.5 ounces per gallon of fuel is a good ratio.

As far as the dipstick, it looks different on 2004s I think. Anyway, you should try to keep it close to the top line without over filling it. Check oil level every fuel-up. It's a good idea to use a funnel with a long neck when filling up the oil so that none gets sucked up into the intake. Read the owner's manual and it will answer most of your basic questions.

You should be adding about a quart to your oil every 1,000 miles or so. Not exact, but just to give you an idea of the oil consumption.

And reading the dipstick is no different on our engine, than any engine. If the oil is between the marks, closer to the top, you're good. The engine design is different, but the full mark still means you're full. Less still means you're not completely full on oil.

For premix, use any oil that's safe for combustion and all. 2 stroke oil, for example, or, I personally use Idemitsu Premix. And yes, add it before adding fuel, into the fuel.

Changing the oil is just like any other engine too.. You remove the drain plug, drain it, remove the filter, replace with a new filter, reinstall the plug, tighten both of those down, and add the appropriate amount of oil, and check it.

Changing spark plugs is just like changing spark plugs in another engine, only our's don't require gapping. Just remove the old, replace with new, and don't overtighten them.

The engine may be different, but maintenance is maintenance, and a car is a car. Don't be afraid of it, just be thorough as you would with any other car.

he forgot to ask about gas and what type of oil:

regular is ok
5w20 5w30 and so on are fine.
you wont get more than 22 mpg highway
premix in your gas tank
and redline it to keep the carbon away

Some good advice here, but I would add that regular 2-stroke oil should be avoided as a premix. The blue and green dyes used in some oils have proven to clog our fuel filters over time. It looks like a gob of tar when you remove the filter.
I use Idemitsu exclusively, 6-8 ounces per tank. 8 ounces during hot weather, tapering off as the weather cools down. The Idemitsu also is formulated specifically for rotaries- ashing properties, etc. I keep a graduated 8-ounce squeeze bottle in the trunk.

Our dipsticks are notoriously hard to read. A trick I learned is to remove and clean the stick, then sand the end with some very fine sandpaper, say 220 grit, until the surface is grained. Clean it thoroughly again before re-inserting it into the engine.

The light scratching will allow the oil to cling more effectively to the stick and make reading the level much more certain.

And, oh yeah...I get up to 27mpg highway. :)

+1, I use Idemitsu only as well, I premix 1/2oz per gallon as they "recommend".

However, I can honestly say that even I don't get 27 on the highway, with all maintenance kept up and a lower mileage '04. Are you drafting a truck for that? Geez. I only get about 22-23, I'm not certain, because I ALWAYS get stuck in a traffic jam on any full tank of highway travel.

LOL, no worries, I don't get 27 all the time. Only when driving at about 80mph in 6th, on flat straight roads and no head wind (cross-country). In typical freeway driving at 65mph, or changing altitude a lot, it drops to more like 22-24.

But I had to throw that 27mpg in there because it does happen!

If by regular gas, you mean gas from a pump, not something for hybrid fuel vehicles, or pure race gas, yes.

But it does have to be premium regular gas.

Short story, there's a reason it says premium on the inside of the fuel door...
