Oil cooler radiator.

I have noticed that on my 6-speed RX8 on the right side fog lamp hole there is oil cooler radiator and on the left side there is a cover. I thought there were oil coolers on both sides?

What do you have on your car?

Glyphon 03-14-2006 12:35 PM

oil coolers on both sides.

There's one oil cooler for automatics, and 2 for manuals.

Sometimes......

The ONLY carz with two coolers are North American spec 6 speeds.

Automatics, 5 speeds and "the-rest-of-the-world-6-speed" get one cooler, (though I'm not sure how many are on the Euro spec 6speed.)

Right, only USA 6sp's have 2 coolers, at least in 04-05, not sure what 06 has in store.

CyprusRX8 03-14-2006 01:12 PM

Glad to hear this, I thought I was missing an oil cooler!

Euro spec "High Power 6 speed" RX8s get 2 coolers from what I know. Mine is a Japanese spec.

Anyone else outside America and Europe? Prehaps Australia or Asia?

I wonder why there is this difference considering tha fact that the Jap specs are the most powerful of the high power models.

Well... I asked the same question on a Hungarian RX-8 forum and the response was that even the 4-port engine has two oil coolers there (I think the guy was talking about the 5-speed manual but I didn't ask). So I suppose there will be other countries where the RX-8 has two oil coolers, not just in the USA.

I will have 2 oil coolers soon ;)

go HKS!! lol

I think I heard that the 06 autos were going to twin cools in response to the engine failures last summer in the hot climates. This is not confirmed so take it for what is worth.

Ok I'm putting my flame suit on for this, Is one oil cooler enough for tracking?

Not in Brunei. They've had significant problems on the automatic (one oil cooler) in Vegas. :naughty:

How resistant are those coolers? after looking at them I thought they might break with a somewhat sizeable rock and spray your oil all over the road in front of your tire.

That's why many have purchased or fabricated screens to cover the oil coolers. Do a search on here and you'll find numerous comments about screens, including photos of the installation.

I think Racing Beat will sell you oil cooler screens AND a screen for the radiator for around $75 combined.

how hard is it to install?

DrDiaboloco 03-15-2006 10:38 AM

Well, I may find out soon enough for myself. :wink2: BTW I was wrong about the price, it's not $75, it's $87 for all three screens, plus shipping of course (and tax if you ship to CA). Shipping to my part of the world would be around 15 bucks.

The oil cooler screens look like they just drop into the oil cooler inlet ducts, but the radiator/condensor screen is mounted with four bolts. I just talked to a rep from RB and he said that the larger screen mounts with four bolts into pre-existing mounting points.

The "hard" part is that to install ANY of these screens you have to remove the nose clip. From other threads I've read on here, that's not as hard as it sounds and can be doneby one person in around an hour with the most common of hand tools. There are DIY threads with photos showing the process if you do the search. You may want to look at those threads and decide ahead of time if you want to paint your screens first, since the screens are stainless steel and go better with silver and gray cars than the other colors (though this obviously comes down to personal taste) and some have painted theirs black before installation.

Not hard at all. If this is your first time it might take u around 2 hours or so.

The hardest part is the take the front bumper(nose) off.

Oil cooler screen are pretty much "slip it into the plastic thing"

A/C condenser will take you longer, one thing to keep in mind is that DONT LOOSE ALL 4 BOLTS AT THE SAME TIME or YOU WILL FEEL SORRY ! :rollingla

Do it one at a time to hook the screen up.

but, if you're going to get Mazdaspeed Front Bumper. you can save some money by just ordering the A/C Condenser one.

Zero_Rotary 03-17-2006 12:12 AM

I have an extra oil cooler from HKS...and a Blitz trans cooler on the way!
Its so hot in Brunei...better be safe than sorry...

Anyways for oil cooler protection u can just add a custom mesh grill...not necessarily need to buy those RB ones
