Oil change

So i just acquired an RX8 and was wanting to change the oil. But the manual says that you need a tool for the filter? what? Also It looks sort of like i have a small leak. Gaskets maybe? Idk ive never had a rotary before. https://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphot...18248031_n.jpg

Hello and welcome!

First things first, before you even do your oil change, read this whole thread. Actually, read it a few times. Let it sink in.

Second, searching this forum before asking questions is incredibly important. We've all been here for awhile and some of us get cranky seeing the same n00b questions asked over and over. For instance, there has been a DIY on changing the oil in the RX-8 since 2003 located here: https://www.rx8club.com/do-yourself-...dummies-12455/ Just DON'T use 5W-20. 5W-30 at the least.

Personal favorite way to search is employ Google. If you type in a new Google search "site:rx8club.com what you're searching for", you'll get tons of useful responses.

As for the oil around the pan? I would clean up that area real good with brake cleaner and some rags and see if it comes back. That way you'll know you have a leak.

Good luck! O and now go read that first thing I posted again.

That would be an oil filter wrench. You'll also need one for the drain plug.

I just took a quick look at the DIY. Besides using heavier oil, as rickeo suggests, get an OEM Mazda oil filter from a dealer. There are past threads from folks who know their stuff indicating that the OEM filters are as good as the best aftermarket ones, and better than typical.

The absence of a long "Which is the best filter" thread tells me that's a solid conclusion. :)

If it leaks oil, you should know when you park your car overnight, and see an oil leak on the ground...

Probably your oil level sensor or residual oil from previously changing the filter.

I didn't have any problems getting the filter off by hand, a filter wrench would have been easier and I have average sized hands.
