What Brand Oil Do You Use - Poll
 

So OK.

I've just sat here and read 13 pages of posts on oil. To the best of my knowledge there has not yet been a poll on what oil brand people are using. I think the main reason people continually ask what types of oil people use is for reassurance that they are using the same thing everyone else uses, or uncomfortable with trying something out side of the norm.

So here it is. This is NOT a post asking people for advice on what oil to use because that has been covered. This is more of a study to see what percentages of people are using a particular brand. Nothing more, nothing less.

THe point that everyone is missing is that Mazda have produced their own oil for Renesis engines and that this has been tested and will not damage the engine in any way in the long term. All other oils that you choose to use may or may not do any damage to the motor. ROtary engines are high tech and when laymen do not adhere to manufacturer's advice they may do long term damage to tne engine which will result in an expensive rebuild, as well as damaging the reputation of rotary engine longevity. If you think that saving a few dollars every 5000 miles is worth it then go ahead, but I sahll continue to use oils that have been approved by Mazda.

I'm confused. Are you saying there is a Mazda brand engine oil that they sell to the service departments for rotary engine oil changes? And you are also saying that this special oil is more than the SAE 5W20 / "API Service SL" specified in the owners manual?

The oil is injected into the chambers to lubricate seals and it must be burnt fully otherwise oil sludge can develop and cause the seals to jam, resulting in no compression and an engine rebuild. The Mazda oil is a special formulation made by Castrol and has been tested by Mazda and shown to cause no long term damage to the motor. The same cannot be said for any of the other oils on the market. Make up your own mind as to which is safer to use in your motor. THe other oils may be OK, but they have not been tested on rotary engines.

So you say synthetic oil can actually DAMAGE a rotary engine?

They don't sell that Japanese imported "Mazda" oil here, the dealers use PetroCanada oil, so I guess we are doomed. :nono:

Maybe you should search around on this forum, see if your theory about synthetic oil sludging up rotaries is widely accepted, or just a bunch of hooey you dreamed up? :hahano:

Interesting theory. Definitely high on the novelty meter. In over 30 years of driving Mazda rotary engine cars this is the very first I have heard about a "special" rotary engine motor oil for the "street" environment (can't speak about the "track" environment).

there is a new oil on the market, just started being imported from japan to the us, saw it in rotary tuner mag, last issue. I forget the name of it though but it is recommended to be used in rotary engines. Thats all i know about that.

Wrong, wrong, wrong - do you not see how the two statements quoted above are contradictory? Have you even bothered to read your owners manual before you invented the above fiction?

For the record - in North America, Mazda specifies AND APPROVES the oil grade listed in the owners manual - ANY and EVERY oil that meets those specs is approved by Mazda for use in the RX-8. That means that EVERY oil that is 5W20 and meets API SL spec is fully approved. There is NO single approved oil.

SymSym, YOU need to read over the previous oil threads here - your information is completely off-base (ie wrong).

I switched to Mobil 1 Syn at my last oil change, I was using Castrol.
