Oh no! An RX-8 rental car
I was driving down to the auto store to pick up some wheel cleaner when I saw a gray RX-8 just ahead, so I prepare to wave. First thing I notice is that the exhaust tips are filthy. Second thing I notice is the yellow bumper sticker -- Triangle Rental Car.
One of the few I've seen on the road -- and it's a rental. I didn't wave. |
I was actually looking for an 8 rental for a possible road trip. The only ones I've seen are at specialty or exotic rentals.
Our local AutoRent stocks some rental 8s. The used to rent Miatas. Very cool if you want to try the car but can't afford to but.
I think it's retarded for any rental company to have rotary-engined cars in stock. The average person would have no idea how to care for it and would likely flood it, go on a long road trip without knowing the check the oil, etc.
Economy Rent a Car in town here had a Nordic Green and Winning Blue...both were totalled.

Maybe they will become collectors like the 1966 Shelby GT350H Mustangs??? :)

Hertz Rental
Mazda sold a number of RX8 to Hertz rental-they are throughout the US, with exception of most New England states. They actually cost no more to rent than any other mid size car. See if you can rent a Honda S200, or 350Z
Why do I always get a Chevrolet Malibu Classic then?
There are premium divisions to most large rental car places (Enterprise, Hertz) and many carry Corvettes, Land Rovers, Jaguars, H2s etc. Prices are ridiculous though.
Nothing wrong with Rx8 as rental cars, I've also seen F360, Vipers, and other cars like that. But of course they were exotics, so....
Ford/Hertz/Mazda
All connected (Ford is stakeholder of each) really no surprizes here.

Cool, now I can drive an 8 like it's a rental
Come on, you know you thrash on rentals. I have done things in rental cars I would never dream of doing in my own car. |
heehee, i would so rent a rx8 if i saw it in the lot of a regular run of the mill enterprise or whatever and have so much fun with it. now that i think about it they're probably all automatics so they're all slow and boring...nevermind.
plus all the rentals are automatic no?

Louisiana or Los Angeles?
Los Angeles. And over in City of Industry is like tuner capital...and here I am in a Sunfire, my RX-8 carefully tucked away 3000 miles away in Michigan...
tuner capital is debatable, for sure LA county/San Gabriel Valley/San Diego county is where its from

I would rent an 8 in a heart beat, auto or stick. you just dont see rotary rentals, ppl are scared to work on them..even tho they are an overall more simple engine.
as far as the sunfire goes, they are fun to abuse thats for sure. i bought one brand new in 04 (dont ask, i just got a sweet deal on it: had good mpg plus loaded w/ stereo and electric blue paint), and after a few rides thru the mountain roads, the ten yr old GM designed frame began to twist on the turns, and my trunk lid had probs closing a few times. dont worry im getting rid of it now... |

I'm heading to LA in May for E3... anyone know if you can rent RX-8's there? I usually go with Budget.

e3, luuuucky. i doubt if budget will have rx8's, i believe enterprise does, but dont expect to find one easily.
