Official RX-8 Car Cover

I'm going to be moving to an apartment where the parking is only a space with a roof over it. I'm worried about my car getting scratched or dinged. I'm wondering if anyone has the official RX-8 car cover and whether it's worth the money over a standard cover. I like the fact that it can be locked and it goes on tight, but how long does it take to put on or take off and will the material on the inside scratch the car? If anyone has the cover, can you help me answer those questions please. Thanks.

Hey Lion,

I have the cover but to be honest, I rarely use it. I like the fact that the cover is very snug but if your car is not super clean, you run the risk of scratching your paint. Not because of the materials used on the cover, but more because you'll be smashing that dirt into the paint.

I don't know how much protection it would offer against dings but it should do a good job of preventing those accidental scratches.

and weather. i JUST got that cover like 3 days ago and it protects against rain, big thing for me bc its not garaged kept. its a LIL bit of a whore to get it on but most covers will. specially ones that fit o so right like oem car specific covers. yeah its wicked expensive but the next time u go on vaca w/o your dearest baby and u put the cover on, ull be glad u did.

imho id wash it b4 u put the cover on, ALL covers run the risk of scratching if u put em on dirty. like whats-his-name said earlier

I got a "Budge LITE" car cover for $29.99 at O'Rielley's. I mostly got it for protection against the damn water sprinkler my apartment insists on turning on every night. It works great! And it was $29.99. --> Score.

I'm a big fan of the Covercraft "Dustop" cover (available from many car accessory websites). I park in a very dusty public garage and it does a great job of keeping the dust off—dust that somehow finds its way through other covers. Plus it's thick enough to resist door dings. Takes me about 3 minutes to remove and fold; 30 seconds to put on. The only time I don't use it is when the car is clearly dirty—if it's just a little bit dirty I figure the protection from dings outweighs the chance of nearly invisible scratches.

+1 . i have car covers for the infiniti too. never use it because its never 100% clean and i do not want to risk marring it. its useless unless its a showcar.

Like Jedi said it's a very snug fit, even more so if you have the appearence package and rear spoiler.

I have the official cover, it's very tight the first few times you put it on, but it becomes more loose later on and easier to put on. I don't have the appearence package or rear spoiler.

It does leave lots of marks all over my car, I keep it covered most of the time when it's outside in the driveway. The rest of the time, it's in a garage near my workplace. I try to wash it once a week, so it's not a huge deal.

One thing that's great about a car cover is that it protects the paint from bird droppings and small twigs/branches when it falls on your car, which happens a lot to my car.

I got the grey/black color since it doesn't stand out too much.

swoope (or anyone else with the Noah or Evolution covers), how big would you say is the risk of scratching the paint if the car isn't washed for a week or two? If it does run the risk of scratching, would it be the swirl mark scratches or something that is more damaging? My problem is I'm moving to a new area and living in a place without a garage. I have absolutely no idea what I'm going to do for car maintenance. Ever since I got the RX-8, I've been incredibly paranoid of parking garages and even freeways (never know when debris might hit you) and so want protection against other people's stupidity. Thanks.

my car spends most of the time in the garage... i mean when i am not driving it....51k miles in 2.5 yrs..... do the math...

the cover gets used when i am not at home.... about twice a month i spend 3 days in naples.... my car does not get washed when i get there... i use the cover..... never had a problem.... now i i had mud or sand all over the car.

common sense...

I have a matching yellow cover...it fits like a speedo swimsuit. I use mine at work a lot.....the parking lot is an inferno with all the asphalt. I would get it and use it. It is very easy to take off. It will prevent you rinterior and exterior paint from fading too.
