NY emissions
 

So, a dealer in PA is telling me there might be a probelm selling me an 05, because it doesn't have CA emissions. He has another one (same price but not the color I want), which does have CA emissions.

Is this BS? I know NY is adopting the tougher CA emission standards, but according to the NY DMV website, that's for the '09 model year. As far as I know (from a couple of threads turned up here using the search function), there is no physical difference between a CA and a non-CA RX-8, just the sticker under the hood.

So, can I buy a non-CA car outside of NY state, and get it titled/registered in NY? I know NY has some fairly annoying emission laws (like not being able to buy the VW turbo diesels unless they're more than 7 years old), but this sounds odd. :mad:

I think I had read in one of zooms44's post the breakdown for the ECU coding and California was listed as a separate line item. I don't know if there are any other goodies that they also put on the car, or if it is simply done thru the ECU coding. If it is based on the ECU, then you simply need to have it reflashed to the other version.

That is of course if New York requires the same things as CA. Otherwise it should pass with no changes.

i purchased my rx8 in virginia which is a non emission state. my vehicle is EPA approved by the FEDS but not from california. how do I make my vehicle meet california standards? do i have to change the exhaust system? help me please.

is your car stock? cause if it is it should meet standards.....

Why do you need your vhicle to pass California emissions?

At least in California the law is fairly clear. If you are a California resident the car must be "used" before it can be brough into the state. That means (from memory) you must have 7500 miles or more on the car. It then only has to meet Fed regulations [if sold as a Fed vehicle].

If the car has less then 7500 miles, then you are screwed. You are not allowed to import the vehicle (as a CA resident...)

i have a non cali RX8 and I am having a problem registering it in NY. is there anything I have to do to the vehicle to bring it up to standard?

I appreciate the response. My vehicle states on the title that it doesnt meet cali emission but it does the fed EPA. NY adheres by the standards of california. I just want to know how can I get my vehicle up to standards. Do I have to change something?

When I lived in the Eclipse world. The Fed Spec vehicles had 2 catalytic converters, the Cali spec had 4. No one wanted a Cali spec vehicle. I think it's Cali state law that their vehicles have to have 4 cats. I might be wrong on this....but i'm pretty damn sure.

tito: check the New York state laws on building a car from another state. If the CA emissions are required, you might not be allowed to import a "new" car, similar to California rules. In that case you may have a problem.

As far as I am aware, the difference between CA and non-CA RX-8's in simply the ECU programming. However, the dealership (AFAIK) won't change your ECU programming from one to the other.

you should be asking your DMV- they probably just have an extra fee or something- i mean what are they going to do with people who move there from another state?

In the "titles" section of the NY DMV website (can't find the link right now) there's a section discussing different vehicle classifications, and model years. i.e. trucks built before 200x, light vehicles (GVW less than xyz) before 200x, etc. I didn't see passenger cars listed there, and I think specifically they're only adopting the rules for passenger cars in the 1009 model year. BTW, as for my initial problem, I just bought one from a different out of state dealer and got a 50 state vehicle.
