non turbo fc rx7, $1300, d.c. area peeps help?

http://washingtondc.craigslist.org/n...146240650.html

i've been thinking about getting the gf a car. :eyetwitch or rather, buying a car for me to just absolutely thrash and let the gf drive it. or fix it up and then sell it to her. etc. she needs a car in any regard.

so this rx7, seems like a decent deal. :eyetwitch when the guy bought it, it wasnt running. its non-turbo so thats good. that issue out of the way. he got it running, but i guess it frustrated him. i talked to him, he doesnt seem that old. 20s. apparently he is a rotor head and loves rx7s. it has some dents and dings, ok. the issue is that it will run for 2 minutes and stop. i could throw another $500 into it, no problem. but im not trying to throw 2 grand into it.

its located near fredericksburg, which is a decent distance for me. but i have a tentative date to go see it this saturday. is there anyone here that knows rx7s and is in the area that is willing to go see it with me? i'll buy you food. :)

Have you tried 7club?

And if it only runs for 5 minutes, I would think that an old car like that may need more than $500 in repairs to keep her in good shape.

^ +1

And if I were buying my gf a car, I would want it to be a reliable one.

ndhoffma 05-04-2009 12:50 PM

I agree. Even in that price range, you can still get a running car; Id go for a car that is more reliable than flashy or fast

I dont know much about 7s, but Id imagine you would sink a lot of time and $ into that car to get it running reliably

mscamp02 05-04-2009 01:02 PM

Hmmm...Id get something that at least runs from the get go

carbonRX8 05-04-2009 01:25 PM

The following is my opinion and is not a judgement on you, your mama or on crappy rotaries in general:

Dont do it. It will be a money/time pit that will cost thousands to get running reliably and thousands more to get to point that you are pleased. By that point you will have pissed off the gf to a point she doesnt even want to drive the car.

Get her a beater civic.

Srsly.

Sad that this forum now requires disclaimers to stay on topic.

FC's are known for having TPS drama causing bad idles and stalling.

But as a general rule - I would shy away unless you just want a weekend fun car.

04RX8man 05-04-2009 01:46 PM

^agree with Kane on the TPS problems....I wold also stay away.......just buy her an 8 they are def dropping in prices!!!

kersh4w 05-04-2009 02:49 PM

its not really for the gf. its for me. but if it ends up running reliably, you know, then maybe. maybe i should stick to looking at e30s. i just want something old i can mess around with.

afaik, a lot of the problems with the 7s had to do with the turbos. so i figured a nice non-turbo 7 might be fun to play with. but if you guys are saying no, i might pass. now wheres a nice mtech-1 e30 for $2k.. lol.

CyberPitz 05-04-2009 03:17 PM

I've never really had too many issues with non-turbo RX-7's. The idle problem just may end up being something simple. Your best bet is when you go there, do some TPS checks. There are some simple things you can do with a voltmeter to verify it's set up right and working still. Also, more information on how it dies would help. Can you keep it alive by applying gas? I wouldn't let the oldness of the car shy you away. It would be best to do some more research on it at www.rx7club.com. Although, what people are saying is true...it won't be easy/free to get it running 100%. Though, I've had quite a few times when the car wouldn't do something right, and a simple fix resolved it. For that price, I'd say grab it.

now why cant you be here in the d.c. area?

lepichichi 05-04-2009 03:57 PM

$1300??? non runing engine??? i think you can lower it down to a $900 and then that would be a good price GL with the buy, and try the www.rx7club.com

Why can't ANYBODY be in the Missouri area?

Try this...
http://www.cochran-racing.com/FSM/s4/01_ENGINE.pdf

There are poor idling and ways to adjust the BAC Valve to maybe increase the idle. Since I still am not sure about how it's dying, these are things I'd try also.
