New rx8 owner question

My g/f is looking at getting a rx8, it will be used and its going to be less then 10k. Now to me that seems really really low price from a dealer.

I know very little about the car itself. Although i am very familar with a rotary( i own a turbo FC rx7). So out side of the engine what should i be looking for as in trouble spots for this car?

I'd watch out for that car, 10k is too cheap. I bet it either has lots of miles on it, or has been wrecked.

As long as you are very familiar with rotaries you won't have any trouble, its a well made car.

im going to do a compression check on it when we look at it. I got a feeling the seals are gone in it. If the car is fine though ill just tell her to buy it and resell it for normal value.

10K?!? That sounds like a borderline salvaged title! I havent seen any for sale under 18K, if THAT low.

CrypticApathy 05-01-2007 01:26 PM

Thats why i was kinda wondering if something is wrong with it. It is a auto, but even at that i havnt seen any for 10k. I havnt talked to the guy but judging by what she told me he seemed kinda worried when she told him what i drive. I got a feeling he was trying to to make a quick buck off her.

Like i said though outside of the engine i know very little about these cars and what usually breaks in them. I just wanted to know what else to look for.

Sounds like something is very wrong. Salvage? VIN check? Mechanic check?

CrypticApathy 05-01-2007 02:31 PM

The only mechanic id trust to look at it shop will be closed by the time we get up there. Havnt had a chance to do a vin or salvage.

i mean....i got mine for 17,800 with 6k miles....but i also sell cars...muahahaha no really though, something sounds fishy...just from my own experience, we (the ones in the business) aren't in the habit of losing money so if your paying 10K then it sounds like something to stay away from because your probably looking at an R title or frame damage or flood damage....remember you get what you pay for, its not worth it to skimp for an rx-8

If it has a bad engine, a dealer might be able to warrantee it under the emissions recall/bad omp even if the cause was actually abuse - especially if they are willing to try and pass it on to someone else. I'm not sure if this applied to the auto 4-ports. $10k is probably about $6k low for something with some miles on it.

Definitely check the edges of the car for repaint signs.

yeah ... i have never seen a rx8 that low

car details

I sometimes go to the car auctions specifically for dealers, which is where they sell nice cars for alot cheaper than u would think they would go for, and he are some some tips my grandpa told me about selectingcars to choose from.

1. Open the hood and run your finger all around the edge, if it seems bumpy or rough it could be because it was repainted.that roughness could be where there was a tape line where they taped it off for painting, this could be from a car accident or somethingof that matter.(repeat with edge of trunk)

2. look at the reflection of the paint along the car and bumpers to see if the paint kind of looks like rippled water or not smooth, this also could mean that part of the car was in an accident and repainted.

3. open the trunk and inside of the car and throughly sniff the inside of the car for any remnance of a paint smell, thats a sign of repainting.

these may be kind of basic things but it can really help you decide if its the right car to buy.

happy hunting
