New RX-8 Owner, one question

Hey everyone, I just obtained a 2004 Winning Blue GT yesterday. I have been looking for an RX-8 for quite some time now and finally stumbled upon a good one in my price range. This is my second car I have owned, first one being a 1991 Toyota MR2 Turbo. So I'm sure you can see that I love sports car with good handling :). I'm not new to rotaries as well, as I've worked on my friends' FDs and TIIs in the past. Right now, i'm changing out all of the fluids and even bought me a box of idemitsu premix.

When i bought the car, the previous owner only had one key and one remote. The remote does not work. I went to the dealer to check things out. The service tech tried to reprogram the remote but with no success(from what i saw, he followed the steps shown in our DIY section https://www.rx8club.com/showthread.php?t=43873). He said my remote was dead(battery is good) and would need to get a new remote. Getting a new key would also cost ~$40, and programming(the key) would be another $95 on top. He said I might be able to find a cheaper key or remote online, but the programming(key) will still cost $95. So my question is, is there a cheaper way(ie free) to get another key programmed?

Thanks

If you have the actual key you should be able to buy a key fob, and program it yourself. Both of my key fobs stopped working, so I got one from a friend who had an extra one. Just put your key in the ignition, open the door, turn the key on-off-on-off-on-off. then press the button on the door 3 times, then press the lock button, and finally press a button on the key fob twice. It should now be programmed to your car.

then press up, down, left, left, A, and select. If you do it right you get 10 extra lifes

sarcasm is great lol. as for the remote situation, i just think my remote's dead. Still need to know if its possible to program a key without the dealer while only having one working key(not 2).

yes, you can program it with one key
