New RX 8 Owner Help

Hello, I was wondering if someone could tell me a little more about the RX 8. I heard that it is high maintenance. I was wondering if someone could tell me how much it cost anualy for up keep of a RX 8. I am considering buying one very soon and would like to know if I would be able to afford it or not.

Thanks.

You can find a few threads on here about maintenance but honestly all you need is to check the oil every fill up and keep it topped off and only use good gas. Other than that just standard maintenance.

Follow the maintenance schedule in your manual or if you dont have one you can look at this thread and it will be the first PDF titled 229.pdf

How long is a peice of string?

No one can answer your question without knowing,

Your age
Your driving history
The kind of driving and milage you intend to do
What kind of budget you have
and im sure a few more variables as well.

What I can say is its a sportscar that does an average of 20mpg. A good one will cost no more / less than any other similar car to run. I suggest you just read all the guides on here, there is a ton of info directed as new owners.

It really depends on the car and your driving habits.

If you are thinking of buying one, and it has less than 40k miles, at the very least, you are probably going to need to change the oil, oil filter, transmission, rear differential, and possibly the cabin air filter. Might need to clean the MAF. Replace an engine mount or two. Replace a starter, fuel pump, and possibly the ignition coils, spark plugs, and spark plug wires.

If the car has over 40k, you might as well switch all of those directly into the must change column.

If the car is an 04 or o5 car, you will have to change to a newer style starter, and it would be a great idea to replace the fuel pump.

But, you should read the new owners thread, and get a better feel for what you might be getting yourself into.

BC.

This is one of the RX 8's im looking at:
2004 Mazda RX-8, Used Cars For Sale - Carsforsale.com

I'm 18, got a part time job and probably won't be driving too much. To and from school, and driving around my city. Not too many road trips or long rides. I'm a good driver, never got into an accident that I've been driving for 2 years.

You're buying a 9 year old sports car. There's risk built into that no matter what particular brand. If you're on a shoestring, this might not be wise. On the other hand, you're 18 and wisdom is not really expected. Lots of time for that in the far future. :)

Bladecutter's list looks great for figuring how much spare cash to have on hand. You may not need to replace the fuel pump or starter, but at that age something else of comparable value is likely to need attention.

I notice the mileage is not listed, no doubt its high then and that front spoiler looks like its hanging off, not a sign of a good previous owner. Best advice is get more details and on a car that age, a compression test is a MUST.

Thanks for all the help you guys. This was just the closest RX 8 to me. I'm not planning on getting one for probably a month or so. And yeah I noticed the bumper and the milage. I wasn't planning on just buying it. I would go see how it runs and the damage and milage and whats to fix and whats good on it and what needs to be replaced. I'm sure by the time I get one there will be a better selection. I live by Chicago so thats why I found this one. I'm willing to go out of my way a few hundred miles to get a good one especially if I'm gonna have it for a while.
