New JDM owner (in Cyprus) w/ questions

I have recently bought a 6MT (apparently ex demo w/ 10k kilometres) Its a JDM first registered in Japan 11/03 but i have no idea when it was built. If anybody can answer the following i'd be grateful.

1. As its a JDM 8 does that mean it has 247bhp as opposed to the EU 231bhp (does it make a difference to performance)

2. What flash is it likely to have (or do these flashes only apply to US/EU models?)

3. I'm guessing that here in Cyprus the officially offered 8's are the 231bhp uk model. If i manage to get Mazda to fkash it will the re-flash convert it down to 231bhp like all other EU models?

4. It seems to be limited to 7000 rpm in 5th and 6th equating to about 187 and 197 kmh respectively. Is this standard for JDM's and how can i de-limit it.

5. Being a Jap spec radio you cant get any decent FM radio stations here. Can i replace the radio's modulator-thingey with an EU (or i guess US) spec one, and what is its real name or part number.

thanks

is an old thread and I guess all those questions were answered by now but it still worths to type them (again) down :)

1. JDM type S (high power) produces 247hp (185KW). Mind that this will happen as the very top revs (near red line) which is not a major gain anywhere besides a track (and maybe traffic light to traffic light mini-races  ) Also worth to mention, most probably you car's title doesn't really mention the actual KW - mine is also a JDM8/high power and my title says something about 150KW. Last comment is that Mazda in cyprus can still tell you exactly which 'power' model you have; their computer cannot read all the details from JDM (e.g. cannot read the actual millage) but they can still see the engine 'set' of the car.

2/3. So far didn't manage to get hold of any JDM flashes or any updates for such anyway. If you get your ECU flashed in Cyprus you will get the EU flash for which I'm not sure if it will be 100% compatible. although I cannot see why it cannot work. You will 'go down' to the 228hp (this is the EU count, 231 is the US one) as your ECU will use the EU maps after the flash. The only benefits out of it is that you will get increased oiling of your rotors and lower emissions (not sure if you care about the latter though....)

4. JDM cars are electronically limited to 180Km/h. In practive the RX8 will reach 188 to have the limiter kicked-in. Depents the road you are driving you might achieve less or more speed around that limit. The rpm are limited to 9000.
Now, your 7000 limit can raise a question : is it really a high power ? or is it some 'special' arrangement that was done in japan ?

5. There are some small converters for this; you plug it between your radio and the antenna cable and they are shifting the frequencies so you can receive EU/US stations on the JDM radio. The display though will remain as is; showing the wrong frequency so you will need to do some calculations.
My opinion is that this thing sucks; the reception is really bad.
The only 'real' solution is to get a EU/US head unit and replace yours, something that will not come cheap.

no rx8 has more than 225bhp.

the jdm, the eu, the usa high power models all have the same 225bhp.

anything else is a lie...

hi there,
your answer is based on ?
Mazda itself provided the data (lab measure of course) for all 3 different continents. it is a fact that the JDM version doesn't comply with the EU/US versions for emissions and that is based on the map.

Anyway, the difference is insignificant as all cars dynoed will show a much less bhp count than the factory's.

And build date? Any way to tell on the JDM model? I've had mine for over a year and still don't know when it was built....

XDEEDUBBX 01-12-2010 10:26 PM

it doesnt matter, all RX8's are slow, period.

padilla08 09-29-2010 08:19 AM

so replacing the JDM head unit with the US version would be a cinch as it would be a direct bolt on? will the steering wheel controller and the display on top of the AC vents still work?

Mine's a JDM from the dealership and it says 231 hp only.
