New engines backorder?
 

I was recently approved for an engine replacement under warranty. The dealer told me they needed my car now and that it may take a few weeks to receive the new engine as it is on backorder.

For those of you who got the engine replaced, how long did it take for them to receive it?? my car has been at the dealer for 2 weeks already without news of an engine... :(

I have had a couple of engines changed out. The first one was a new one shipped from Japan. That took about 5 weeks. One coming from one of the rebuild centers took about a week.

I hear mazda has been getting strict on authorizing engine replacements the last few months. I've also noticed that some engine internals become backordered for months on end inexplicably...for instance the most desireable renesis side seals, the extra long cut to length versions, have not been available since early spring. No one in the country has any and mazda will not tell us when they will come out again or why they stopped making them.

I guess this is what I call job security, as long as I can at least get the basic rebuld parts.

I'm in (nearly) the same boat as you. I was told the same thing that they're backordered on the engines and it would probably be a 4-6 week wait right now.

is there a way to know if our engines will come from the rebuild center or if they will be brand new?

And no, they did not give me a rental as Mazda Canada does not offer such a service apparently. i am stuck with my dads 91 camry for now :(

not trying to thread jack OP, but do a lot of people get denied of the motor warranty? :confused:

I am on backorder myself now. It has been two weeks with no update. If the motor is coming from Japan, I am screwed as they just had that 8.9 earthquake along with the tsunami. Where are the rebuild centers? I hope they are in the states, that may be a bit easier for me that way, ugh. Been having to ride with a co-worker to work....don't want to wear out my welcome.

Just got a call from the dealership. Tentative delivery date of my motor: 3/17....happy St. Patrick's Day to me!

Should be installed and ready to roll by 3/21-3/22 at the latest. Given I had my car towed in on 2/28, I will have been without my car for approximately 3 weeks when I get it back.

Edit: for those curious, my motor is coming from the remanufactured plant in the states and not Japan.

Baseball genius what dealer is doing your car? I just took mine in today and the engine is suppose to be here in two to three weeks. I went to bommarito in south county.

I just got my car back from getting the motor replaced, and I can confirm about engine replacements getting backordered. It took about 3 weeks for mine to come in.

I talked to Mazda on the phone today and they told me I can't get a new engine for quite sometime because it's shipped from Japan... I find that hard to believe, but if it's true, well then, I'm screwed.

I own a 05 RX8, original engine, 30,000+ miles, still running good. Just the motor mounts are kinda shaking the engine a little bit, but for the rest of it, everything is still okay.

Trying to take care of the engine by doing preventive maintenance and so forth. I don't wanna do the hassle of it.

got my new engine 5 weeks ago! and it took about 4-5 weeks to get the it!! I dont think theres nothing the dealer can do anyways so just be friendly with them so they dont try to charge you for random shit! And the bill should be $0.00 so dont let them take your money lol

if it is, its gonna take a bit longer, considering all the things going on over there right now.

Actually there are rare times when the reman program in the states falls behind on production (or more likely on reusable core parts to build from) and mazda picks up the slack by bringing over some 100% new hiroshima-assembled blocks and sells them as remans.

Unfortunately you have no way to know which you are getting and you cannot specify that this is what you want, even if you are buying a reman outright with cash (as opposed to getting one free under warranty).

I think it's a bit disturbing how many engines have broken down by the looks in this thread...

The waiting does suck I had my motor flood the end of Dec 2010. It took a good 6 weeks about mid-February for the car to be finished in "working order". However upon first pick up the car kept stalling because a tech swapped vac lines. They then replaced my wires and coils because one was misfiring and trying to cover up for the bad mistake of swapped vacuum lines.

Further, I was told that the motor was on about a 2-3 week delivery time frame and in early January Mazda did not give them an ETA, but once it was at the dealer it took them about 2 days to fully install.



***For all those concerned with not getting approved for warranty*** Keep records of oil changes, receipts for oil, I almost was not approved.

When i got mine back last summer, they told me it came from the assembly line in Japan. Ended up getting the engine installed on week 3. The installation took 2 days and Mazda Canada was billed 4500$ for the engine and install. On the bill it says remanufactured though...

Wait till next year when the 2004 are no longer covered by the 8/100k.

I'm in the same boat. I took my car in for a compression test on 2/17/11. It's now 3/18, and the dealer still has no engine. I got a rental (a ford focus, ugh), but i'm itching to get my car back! they tried to get me to pay for plugs/wires/coils. After and angry phone call to mazdaUSA, I didn't have to pay for plugs/wires/coils.

Best of luck to you guys waiting on these engines. It's a huge pain in the ass, and i know i can look forward to it again in 60-70k miles!


On a side not, if anyone is looking for a good dealership in pa/wv, i79 has treated me well so far. The head mazda tech has owned a first gen rx7, and seemed very knowledgeable. So far, so good.

Well I am sad to say, I now need a new engine too. 3 weeks to one months lead time!

I took mine in (actually had it towed in) about a week ago. They came back telling me I had bad coils, wanted $450 for parts plus labor :crying:
I said, well, if the coils are bad, then most likely the plugs are too, and the price they're asking sounds like they should do coils plus plugs. The service guy told me "plugs are free, mazda will pay for those. You have the engine warranty and they'll cover those." I asked to clarify at least two more times, and he told me that yes, they will replace the plugs, he just didn't ask me if it was ok to do that because they're free; they only need to ask to do the stuff I have to pay to do. So I said ok, that's still very steep, but I guess if you're giving me coils and plugs I will do it just this one time.

The guy also said "we don't want to let you out of here without doing a compression test". He repeated his concern about the engine over and over again, which kind of surprised me. Well, today they called me and said after replacing the coils and plugs and getting the car back running, they did a compression test, sent the results to mazda, and mazda came back with "we need to replace the engine." This all surprised me, because up to now the car has driven fine. Very little vibration, no problems with idling, no problems with starting at all. I've even deflooded the car myself once before, so I really know what kind of issues the car can have with starting, and it really has been starting like clockwork. They told me the main symptom of bad compression is trouble starting, maybe trouble keeping it running at idle. I would think no power is also an issue. Up until my coils completely died, power was not an issue (butt dyno says so, also almost 6 sec 0-60 time, and no trouble passing :cool:)
When the coils went, well I can tell you the power went through the floor. The grand finale was they want to sell me new engine mounts and also new tires too (I knew the tires were on the way out... I have only 20k miles on them). Grrr. The jury's out on the mounts, but the tires I might get elsewhere. I'm thinking of calling mazda usa and hassling them to pay for the mounts too. Shouldn't they?

This is all at Mazda Knoxville in TN. I figure I ought to trust them right? If they weren't trust worthy they would try to find some reason not to cover my engine under warranty I would think.
