New Engine from dealer

Hi all,
I jsut got a call from the dealership that they are going to replace the engine in my rx and i have to wait till next friday to pick it up. Well it all start on thursday before the memorial weekend. I was driving a little fast (92, got it from the ecu) and my check engine light came on. So i brought it to the dealer and they told me that i got a misfire. They changed the spark plug and called it a day. So over the weekend i started noticing the ilde was rought, loss of power, and it stalled on me at a light once. It took me couple minutes to start the car back up and from that point i was pissed (can't take my car out for the weekend).

Well i brought it back to the dealership and they take 2 days to tell me that the engine does not hold compress and will be installing a new engine as soon as it comes in. my old engine had 23000 miles on it. Is this bad for resail? should i ask for a free extended warrenty ? Can a misfire cause the engine to fail that bad ?

Thanks for you replies.

I'd ask for an 'engine' warranty equal to what the warranty on an engine is, when purchasing new. I can't believe a 'brand new' engine is bad for resale; other than you having to state 'the car has 23000 miles, but the engine only has 0 miles'.

:)

Thanks, i will ask them for some form of security. Would you buy a car that has it engine replaced?

well i bought it used with 17000 for 20500. So getting a new engine is not too bad but it does question the new renesis reliability.

While the 8 has had a few engines replaced here and there, it's not like there's a rash of bad motors..

The question YOU must ask yourself (and ask the same from whoever had that car before you did) is .. "How did they treat this engine? Was the oil changed? Was the oil level monitored, and topped-off as needed? Was it allowed to warm up before being wailed on? Was break-in properly done?"

I think you got an abused 8. I'd be concerned about the throwout and pilot bearings on the gearbox as well. Too many punks think it's fashionable and kewl to race the mill to 7000 rpm and dump the clutch in an effort to be more manly and smoke the guy next to 'em yo. In fact, don't be surprised if your car pukes a throwout or pilot down the road.

But dude, you now will have a fresh motor, free from the factory, I mean.. at least you didn't have it go down on you *after* the warranty has expired.. these ain't cheap.. six grand is what I've heared.

Treat this new motor right, and chances are it'll treat you well for a long, long time to come.

This is why I bought my 8 new. I didn't even want the dealer's yard monkeys driving it, moving it or even running it. Yeah, I take a hit on the financial side, but I'll know every inch of that car and its history.. instead of guessing, like I have had to do with used cars in my past.

i took care of the car when i got it. I don't usuall drive fast and i hardly take the rev up over 8k much less to 9k. I checked my oil every other gas fill up and i even shift at 4k most of the time. I don't know who had the car before me, i got it from a use car lot. The engine never gave me trouble before althought the transmission is a little rought in 1 st gear. It could have been abused before i got it but with me, it was taken cared for.

I wasn't implying you smoked the motor.. I was suggesting the owner prior probably did. Of course, the possibility of a bum motor from day one is always there.

Once broken in, do visit the redline a couple of times a day.. it's fun, and good for the car. Once warmed up, of course.. (needle at normal + 10 minutes, so about 15 total..)

Old Rx-7 saying: A shift beep a day keeps the carbon away! :D So I give mine plenty of beeps a day. :)

There's 3 things that kill rotaries faster than anything else: Overheats, pinging, and running low or dry on oil, or neglecting frequent oil changes.. other than that, they're pretty much bulletproof.
