hey guys im about to buy a pearl white MT 8 but i had a few questions before i buy people said that the rx8 is a good car but it gives bad gas millage and like it eats like 1 liter of oil a month is that true???? and if you guys had any problems wiht it can you guys list them thank yall!!!!!

The RX-8 has gas mileage on a par with many other performance cars. Please don't buy one then start a thread on poor mileage.

If you drive with a really heavy foot, you may use a quart of oil in a month - if that scares you, again, don't buy one. (We know, oil is like $2 a jug and you don't want to spend THAT kind of moolah.)

If you can afford the gas (and oil!) you will be driving a unique vehicle that gets more looks than many cars twice as expensive.

You will notice there are a few people whining about their mileage, but there are twice as many who just want to take pictures of their beautiful rides! They are very photogenic.

I don't think mileage is terrible, like a lot of the people that have been complaining. I have gotten 19.4 and 18.73 on the two tanks I have used. Now that I have stopped killing it and taking off is pretty much smooth now (hills still an issue) I expect to start getting better mileage. I also expect my mileage will improve once I get my parking priviledges at work (waiting on my license plate) and can start driving it there 90% freeway. Right now I am in about 50/50 mixed.

Welcome to the forum! I recently bought a Snowflake White RX-8, and I have been really happy with it. It's very different from my old car (Audi A4), but I would say the pros outweigh the cons.

The cons:
1. The traction in inclement weather is pretty bad with the stock tires. Buying better tires should fix this. Then again, I'm used to Quattro.
2. The milage does suck. There's no getting around this. Just don't compare it to anything other than sports cars and you'll be fine.
3. The storage isn't the best. No fold-down rear seats, pretty small trunk, console in the middle of the backseat, so you can't put anything long back there and lay it flat. Once again, compare it to other sports cars, and you'll realize it actually is better than most.

The pros:
1. Looks like an exotic car. I have owned this car for about a month and a half and I have literally not gone a day without somebody asking or commenting about my car. It's like I'm driving a Ferrari. People ask what it is, they ask how many cylanders the engine is (that's always fun to explain), how on earth it's a 4-door, and so on. Everyone else just says "Wow. Nice car."
2. It is ridiculous in terms of performance. I know it's not the best car in the world spec-wise, but good grief it just moves! I completely wrecked an s2000 (honda's acclaimed "boxster killer") off the line yesterday. The handling is better than any car I've ever driven, period. Shifting is a phenomenal experience.
3. The sound. No other car in the world has a sound like the 8. The constant whir of the dual-rotar engine sitting by your feet, the beautiful exhaust note that is as smooth as the tach needle's ascent.

Despite its shortcomings (when compared to a sedan) in room and fuel economy, the 8 is by far the most satisfying car I've ever driven. It's the only car in production with the legendary wankel rotary engine, and that's a huge part of what makes it so special. If you're still on the edge of buying it or not, do yourself a favor and watch TopGear's take on it on youtube. The man knows his cars, and he has some very good things to say about this one. There is nothing on the road that looks, sounds, or feels like it. It can't be compared to anything. It's in its own world and I welcome you to it. Enjoy!

i love this car, but i have to disagree with stealth. as i stated in a few threads down."this car gets crappy gas milage, even for a sports car. my buddy's corvette gets better gas milage than me. the s2000, g35, 350z are all sports cars and get way better gas milage. i even get decent gas milage compared to most on this board. i get 20mpg mixed driving. i just learned to accept the fact that this car's milage sucks. i just hate it when people say "it's a sports car of course it's gas milage is gonna suck", which is WRONG. mazda just hasn't perfected the rotary yet. shit my explorer gets the same gas milage."

cons- gas milage (big factor since gas is now 3.07 in my area), power sucks
pros- everything else, especially looks

I don't see power or gas a problem. Both these topics are subjective. I have enough power to pass almost anyone on the hwy that drives like an idiot. The gas I can reconcile with the experience of driving a rotary. If you race or drive a lot it's probably not the car for you.

it "eats" oil, yes... but hey, my saturn eats a quart per gas tank, so to me that's nothing. Yes the 8 does eat oil, but that's the engine's nature and it's DESIGNED to do that so it's not a sign of trouble.

and yeah it drinks more gas than football players do gatorade... but I think it's worth it to have that amazing engine under your hood.

oh yeah, the 8 is cheaper to insure so the total cost of ownership per year probably evens out with a sports car that gets better gas mileage.

Think about it this way:

1. to buy something that handles better, you're into Porsche territory;

2. to buy something that gets more attention, you're into Ferrari territory;

3. to buy something that gives you a warmer glow of smug satisfaction, you're into Lamborghini territory.

If you can spend the difference on fuel and oil you're doing well. :)

(BTW, oil consumption does reduce after 10K unless you really thrash it all the time).

Of course, there's always the Prius... :bootyshak
