is it possible to hook up a guitar plug in to the sound system?

I hooked my amp and electric guitar up to my car once using a power converter and got some nasty ground noise. I dont know how preamp would sound though. The concept is awesome. What better way to pick up chicks than rockin out in an awesome ride.
