New 8 - 40th anniv edition!

First post....

Just drove home in a brand new 40th anniv. edition RX-8, 40 miles on the clock now. I traded in a 2005 Mini Cooper S. The 8 isn't as torquey but goes like hell when you give it the beans. Really enjoy it so far. The silver and red leather combo is really cool. Hopefully this community is as active and cool as the mini community. Found the board when I was looking at mods.... Good to be here! Its dark and rainy here in paradise (aka NJ), so no great pics yet....

Nice choice I picked a white 08 gt last month. The 40th anniversary is not for me but enjoy is suppose to have a smoother ride than regular 8ths.

CompMan 05-21-2008 09:04 PM

Congrats man.

Where in NJ? I know the rain and pollen sucks!

j67345 05-21-2008 09:33 PM

Congrats!
Try to resist the urge to push it till you break the engine in.

I'm in Princeton. The pollen is unbelievable this year. I felt so mad parking the 8 out back in the piles of pollen.

oh, attached is the worst. picture. ever.

I'll do better in the sunlight, I swear.

congrats! she's a beauty

Remember to be careful during break-in. Nothing over 5k or so for the first 1,000 miles I think.

nrgtrx8 05-21-2008 10:14 PM

car is sexy.... good luck with it...

ChainRotary 05-21-2008 10:15 PM

I'm pretty happy thus far. My cell phone however manages to make the speakers talk...

I may have broken 5000 rpm on the way home... :)

SayNoToPistons 05-21-2008 10:18 PM

Awesome 40th Anni. I hope you wash it frequently!

Welcome.

Misnomer 05-21-2008 10:57 PM

Congrats! I bought the exact same car just 2.5 weeks ago, so I know how you feel. :)

There's tons of pollen here in the DC area, too: I can't wait to wash my baby for the first time this weekend.

Sweet! and Congrats! I just joined the thread today. Everybody seems very cool and helpful.

So about breaking these engines in. Is there really a break in phase? The way I did mine was drive the car for 200 miles nonstop like I just stole it. Then did an oil change. Was I not supposed to do this? It worked for me, but would not advice to do the same if what I did was wrong.

How would review your experience with the mini cooper s? pro's and con's?

Welcome! I love the 40th anniv. rims.

I know it's about a bit of a drive but you should come to the meets at East Rutherford every Tuesday night. Check first post here https://www.rx8club.com/ne-rx-8-forum-29/ne-nj-local-meets-tuesday-nights-121615/ for address and go to page 100+ for latest events.

some guy believes the best way to break it in is to absolutely thrash it and change the oil every 1000 miles for the first 3000 miles.

that guy also has the highest n/a dyno.

just food for thought.

Robonaut 05-22-2008 06:42 AM

Congrats! The Mini's very nice, but the RX8 is rarer (at least in my area) and draws close to the level of attention of an exotic sports car.

Man, those rims do look nice, don't they?

Oh, and read the manual! There's a lot of good stuff in there. Hell, it probably would have taken me a few months to find that second storage bin in the armrest if I hadn't read the manual...

Well let me say that I love the mini, loved it when I dropped it off, and it was bittersweet to pick up the 8. The mini was well modded and was dyno tuned by Revolution Mini Works, so it was very torquey and handled great. I had a great time over the three years I had it. Gas milage was ok (despite my lead foot), and it drew attention. I will say that the mini's, once rare, are now all over the place. People in mini's used to wave to each other, etc, but not so much anymore. The community is still active, generally pretty cool, but has inevitably settled into factions of people supporting this and that vendor or this and that dealer, etc. I just went with who treated me nicely (and in philadelphia there is a fantastic tuner, and he's a super nice guy to talk with, etc - I'm not familiar with the rules of posting support for outside vendors, so I will not mention names).

My only gripe with the car really was that I couldn't get anything in it. I had to put the seats down most of the time when I went to the grocery store, or whatever. That was getting annoying, especially lately. Other than that, the car was great. I had a little bit of an issue with a leaking charcoal canister (which made passing inspections annoying), that was not resolved until 1 year of going to the dealer :banghead: but other than that, it was reliable.

I have always liked the RX-8, fit well in it, and usually circled it three or four times at every auto show at which I saw it. This deal came up, and wtf, live once man, gotta try the new ride. So far :) The comment above about the apparent rarity of the 8, I gotta agree. I've seen maybe 3 in the last few months here in Princeton, whereas I see 10 minis every day.

welcome to the club, enjoy your stay

Congrats & welcome! I work in Princeton (but live in Hunterdon County) so you might see me around (Phantom Blue MT).

Oh, BTW, a California Duster works great with getting rid of the pollen before the rain makes a mess of it. You can pick one up at AutoZone.
