Need help with other Mazda, who else has a 6?
Need Help,
One of my other cars is an 04 Mazda 6. I have an issue with the Brake Master Cylinder that I cannot resolve. I posted to that group, but it did not help. I am now among the group with the same problem that nobody will respond to. Here is what I asked them: Help, I searched and found several folks with the same question, but never any answers. Issue is cap for brake master cylinder. I have an 04 V6 AT. The master cylinder cap does not lock on, it just spins. THERE IS NO WAY IT CAN LOCK. The teeth on the cylinder that would engage the cap are on the outside of the reservoir facing out AND the teeth on the cap are facing out as well. There is no way they can engage. I had the fluid changed a few years ago by the dealer, and there was never an issue. I just changed it again today, and that was when I noticed it. I have never lost any fluid, so there was no reason to mess with the cap (you can see fluid through side of reservoir). If someone can post a picture of their cap (inside) and the reservoir with the cap off, I would appreciate it. I can tell you that an 04 RX8http://images.intellitxt.com/ast/adT...lass_10x10.gif cap fits perfectly with no issues and locks down. Mike |
Guy that parks next to me at work has a 2006 6, I'll have him pop his hood tomorrow and take a looksee. he's kinda clueless when it comes to cars, so I better not ask and just check it out.
Even though it may spin at first, do you feel any resistance from the threads when you turn it to remove it? |

Thanks both. I PM'ed Solidtrance. For Mazurfer, it just spins. There are two flat pieces of plastic, bottom of lid, top of reservoir, lubricated with a little brake fluid, that just slide on each other. Pictures attached. It looks like the bottom of the cap is keyed to fit over the tabs on the reservoir, but it is large enough that it just spins around, the keys and slots do not engage..
When installed, the cap cannot go down any lower, it hits the top of the reservoir in the back. Attachment 160878 Attachment 160879 Attachment 160880 Attachment 160881 Again, any help appreciated. Mike |

I will look tomorrow though as we usually leave at the same time and park in our "unofficial" Mazda row! My 8, his 6, a speed 3, 2 MX-5's, and one older Miata. |
we have one too, only it is just 2 cars. The 8 and a new 3. The is a cherry last gen twin turbo 7, but he uses a different lot.

That's easy! Its a pressure fit.
Look at the cap. The white prongs push in then when the cap is installed. Then pressure from the prongs sticking out secures the cap. Another cheap way to save money. |
Okay, his is tight Mike.
Before I did go out and check it, I did a little searching and found the following info. Apparently there are three tabs on the black cap itself and if you turn the cap too far or too hard you can rip them right off leaving no trace that they were ever there. I don't think that is your issue, but I also read where the engine temp can distort the tabs enough or they can wear down enough where you cannot ever really tighten it. I read that on three different places, and the only solution seemed to be to either zip tie it down in some fashion or, or get a new cap. Those that got a new cap, it was solved. I'm gonna say......go get a new cap. |

Your research skills apparently are much better than mine. I looked again, then looked closer, then took it out into the sun and looked. There are faint traces of tab at the edges of each of the three areas where I would expect they would be if there were tabs at one time. They are sheared off flush. Looks like a new cap is in my future. Thanks a great deal. |
Are you saying the tab braks off and goes into the Brake fluid?
If that happens it is a poor design......... |
From the pic I saw during my search today, I saw a pic that would imply the tabs would NOT end up in the brake fluid, but fall out the bottom of the engine bay eventually, probably when taking cap off. Imagine(if you will) that it's sort of similar to how your radiator cap goes on our coolant bottle, but yet it's all plastic. sort of line up the slots, push down and turn. The tabs then fit under a lip(so to speak) on the outside of the reservoir neck.

That sounds like what could happen, but there is also a screen that would keep them out of the fluid.
This picture is with broken tabs. Inside the circle is where a tab would be. Attachment 161186 If you turn it, and they break, they will likely fall straight down, or fall when you take it off. Either way, the screen would catch the pieces. I am hoping that the new cap is other than a Rev 0 part. Our coils are up to Rev B, I lost track of the current version of the coolant bottle. Thanks again for all the help. I would be interested in knowing where you found the data. I must have gone through 500 posts and links on several sites. |

Anyway, I did read where there is a new cap revision, so don't let them give you an old one. I guess the whole idea of titling a sub forum "Suspension and Brakes", then having the relevant content in the "Engine, 3.0" sub forum is a "6" thing. Brakes are kind of the anti-engine, I should have know they would be together. I found the second one, it was actually in the brake section. Thanks again. |
