IE my rx8 wont start

hi all,

only have my rx8 a couple of weeks and went to start it yesterday and it wouldnt ignite.

At first i thought it was flooded and read the owners manual... did as stated, depressed the accelerator for 10 seconds while cranking, then tried again and still no go.

Any suggestions as to what could be wrong?
I'm presuming its just a matter of starting with the basics as in any car, plugs, leads, coil packs, etc.

any info would be great thanks

from what ive read, the owners manual way of de-flooding is not fool proof and will not always work, you will have to tow it in the majority of the time for this cause

Happened to me last week. I heard a clicking noise when I tried starting. It was the battery. My newest issue though is the coils. My coils are bad and sometimes the car refuses to start because of that. Check the coils, I've learned the stock coils on the 8 are crap and don't last more than 40k-50k miles even though I'm at 33k.

When did the last time you've replaced the plugs, wires, and the coils?

Since nobody asked... did you flood it?
I mean, did you start it and shut it down before the engine warmed up?

forgot to mention, only bought the car 2 weeks ago so not very educated on the rotary engine.

I started it to move out of the driveway to get my bmw out and just switched it off again, so im guessin its probably flooded?

yup defiantly flooded, like above said if it's a manual you can push start it, or there are other various ways that can be pulled up with a search here.

yep ill try push starting it on the weekend..

is that the same as with any normal engine, push as fast as possible and release the clutch in 2nd gear?

if that fails to work is there any other suggestions?

Thumbs up How To Start A Flodded RX-8

1) Attach Battery Charger
2) Hold exelerator to floor and crank 10-15 seconds
3) KEEP ACCELERATOR FLOORED and stop cranking 20-30 Sec
4) Repeat steps 2-3

I had to do this for about 5 minutes before it started. Keep trying, if it's ONLY flooded (ie, nothing else wrong), this should work (but it may take awhile).

Talking RX8 Cold Start Fix Remedy

Hi, after forgetting the GOLDEN RULE and giving my 2005 RX8 (30k miles) a cold start on Saturday evening (19 Oct '13) I went to take the car out on the following Sunday morning and realised my error she wouldn't start.

I consulted many forums for help...and after many hours of being at my wits end and i really didn't want to have to spend money on repairs at this time of the year, i eventually came across the following advice and after an hour & a half...my wheels were back on the road.

The attached link will take you to a set of instructions, carried out by the AA. I persevered with the actions instructed until she was clear. I hope it helps someone else out.

that is an insanely complex solution to a very simple problem.

Hold your gas pedal to the floor. it will ironically perform a fuel cut.

re start after flooding

to Shelldude:

Yes, that's the simplest solution which could take hours doing it repeatedly.

The fix i shared worked for me and i posted it so it can perhaps help other who've also spent a lot of time doing the pedal to floor/fuel cut, that hasn't shown any give. simples

^^^ ding ding

Hours if you have a dead battery, yes... but you'll be spending hours regardless of how you try to short circuit fuel on a dead / weak battery.

I've always been amazed by the things some folks do to get out of a flood... Now before I get flamed, I'm talking the typical I moved my car and accidentally shut it off flood. Weak coils, fouled plugs, low compression, etc certainly complicate the process but that is an entirely different problem

Anyway, the owners manual hits the nail on the head in this space. RTFM.

Ok going with English is your second language.

When you say won't start:
- Does the engine turn over when you turn the key or do you just get nothing?

Assuming the engine is actually cranking over I suspect it's flooded now.

Ok, sounds flooded.
That said you did just changed the clutch so it's anyone's guess what you may have not put back together correctly.
Did you change the clutch or someone else?
What year is the car?
How much mileage?
What kind of maintenance have you done to it: Plugs, Wires, Coils, etc?
Any aftermarket parts?

Have you tried this DYI on Deflooding the car?

It's true, the upgraded starter really cranks faster.
However replacing the starter is band-aid solution to a larger issue IMO
