paimon.soror 09-28-2011 06:12 AM

a sound clip would help

Beodude 09-28-2011 06:27 AM

It's the air pump. No big deal.

jasonrxeight 09-28-2011 07:00 AM

airpump going out.

miater 09-29-2011 07:30 AM

airpump going out - I had the engine check light on and lack of power this morning. This happened yesterday for a while, then it was fine the rest of the day, then this morning it's happening agai

found a youtube video. that's exactly what it is. could it be causing the performance issues the car is having?

not really since it only turns on momentarily when the cat is warming up and shuts off most of the time.

Nope. The air pump has exactly zero affect on performance.

miater 09-29-2011 08:38 AM

nothing to do with the check engine light flashing and lack of power,, which just goes away for no reason.

check engine light flashing means you have misfire. check (replace) coils and spark plugs.

As usual, jason gives sound advice. :-)

As for the air pump, it can set a check engine light, but not until it seizes up and causes the air pump fuse to blow... And then it will set a solid check engine light, not a flashing one.

miater 09-29-2011 08:54 AM

coils and spark plugs - how about wires too....

miater 09-29-2011 09:05 AM

are coils easy enough to replace?

I learned it by watching you!

(Quote from an old 1980's television anti-pot PSA, for all you youngsters.)

oh your all so funny ;-)....sorry trying to work and figure out my car issues at the same time. so call 3 different parts stores today they each have one coil. who has one coil when 4 are needed.
maybe i can call a 4th store and find one there too.

just order online. dont mix match coils.

miater 09-29-2011 07:00 PM

I gotta do something quick barely made it home from work....taking tomorrow off hopefully can find the parts, maybe the local mazda dealer will have em,

StreetGT 09-29-2011 07:18 PM

Ouch, don't do that... A Mazda dealership will completely rip you off.

You can get plugs at Autozone/Kragen for $80

Coils you really should buy online from someone reputable, maybe even take this time to upgrade to the BHR coils?

RX8Soldier 09-29-2011 09:53 PM

where you from, maiter?
check this thread https://www.rx8club.com/rx-8-parts-sale-wanted-44/bnib-plugs-coils-wires-219891/

miater 10-01-2011 02:12 PM

they ripped me off. I just don't have the time or energy for this. I can't even stand to tell you what they charged me, although I am going back next week to get the cat replaced under the extended warranty. it's running really well right now anyway.
they tried to get me to do the motor mounts, I said why , I'm not noticing any untoward vibrations...

Thank you so much for the post. It's really useful.

Are-Ex-Eight 10-05-2011 12:18 PM

Are you sure that table saws don't sound like your engine?
