Is my car special or did they get it right?
I bought my 8 in Oct. It had a August build.
So far I have..... not flooded the engine. I get 22 mpg with 60% highway Center console does not get hot. oil is just below full with 1700 miles. Air does not cycle on and off. no CEL. In fact, no problems at all. So WTF? |
useless sarcastic comment deleted;)
|
i've got 4000 miles on mine and zero problems, but i can't boast your 22 mpg...i get about 18-20, depending on how much highway I drive. in other news I had my spoiler installed today, and they treated me to a loaner red rx-8 and a tank of gas while it was being installed =) Loaner cars are so fun.

Re: Is my car special or did they get it right?
You forgot to mention... do you get the low oil light? But yes, I'd say you got lucky.
Here's my tale: Not flooded the engine. I get 16.8 mpg with 60% highway Center console gets hot. Don't seem to burn much oil. A/C cycles on and off. No CEL. No low oil light. So who's the poor shmuck that gets ALL these problems? Someone who should have taken his car back. |
What are your shift points? Do you go WOT often? Have you dynoed the car, you might even have the 250hp fuel maps. After you go for a drive (with the center console lid closed) open it up and check for heat. Are you sure about the A/C not cycling on and off? The A/C and Heat problem were reported back in April by a few of the RX-8 owners in Japan. So it isn't a US specific issue.

I got my Winning Blue AT in August. It just turned 2k miles. I drive about 80% hiway and have been getting 22-24+mpg.
Oil is down about 1/3 quart - I started checking it at about 1k miles after reading about others having an oil problem so I don't know if it started out that low or it burned it. Other than that, I've had none of the problems others have been talking about. When I take it in for its first service, I'll inquire about the oil pan with baffles and some of the other "fixes" that should be in the dealer's list of TSBs. |
i have no problems, get 20+mpg, i think my ac MIGHT cycle, but ive nevered noticed it, i dont notice any strange warm areas, 2700 miles, oil consumption is not so much
so far my car is right on, and a pleasure to own and drive ________ EXTREME VAPORIZER |
there's only a few people on here with problems. every car model has a few duds..... it's normal.
don't listen to the people who bitch and moan over nitpicky sh#t. this is a GREAT CAR !!!! |

No problems here. The A/C does cycle (cold/cool), but I'm assuming that's by design. 20MPG mileage. 230HP at the wheels.
OK, just kidding on that last item :D |
Havn't flooded engine
No CEL's 2 Low Oil lights (but getting oil pan replaced on friday) Has used 1 quart of oil at 2500 miles (did oil change @ about 1k miles) AC doesn't cycle 13-15 MPG, 80% of driving i'm shifting at 8k-9k, lots of WOT, other 20% i'm stuck in traffic. Center console doesn't get hot But the passenger side door panel is sqeaking when i go over bumps or when i play music with a good amout of bass. All in all i'm pretty happy. |
Ive got 6500 miles
no flooding no oil lights two cel lights 19 mpg |

I'm especially concerned about your mileage. You may need to file a complaint or inquire about the buyback. |
well i have 1600miles
no flooding 15mpg - only 30% highway and always in traffic- that's ok, i tend to drive aggressively (otherwise why buy the car?) aircond ok at 38 degrees celcius centre console heats the ENTIRE cabin once you stop the car and leave it there for a bit (even when parked undercover) no oil pan light no squeaks so I consider myself pretty lucky, less so when its 38 degrees celcius and Im sweating like a pig getting back into my parked car. |
I have 2300 miles
added 1/2 qt of oil 16-20 mpg a/c cycles built 06/03 tire light has come on twice both times all 4 tires were 4 lbs short (its getting colder in NC) drivers side rx 8 kick panel came unglued no other issues |

havent noticed any problems
1800 miles has new wheels, sensors work great although they still suck bought it a month ago don't know when it was built redline it atleast once every time i drive it....ok maybe more than once. It's yellow and everytime i go to a coffee shop everybody inside is talking about it when i get in there as i just eagerly await my mocha. oh yea its a sport package. |
I have had zero issues with my car as well... I am hoping that the fuel economy gets better, but I am only at 1,000 or so miles, so it should get better.
|
Let's see:
2100 miles, Used 1qt of oil No CEL No Oil light No A/C cycling No hot center console No squeaks A few brrrrps around 3000 rpm (both times cold engine) 13-16mpg with around city driving 18-23mpg on highway All in all I'm very pleased, but would like a bit more torque. |
I have 1700 miles on my blue 8. Fuel consumption seems to be getting better. The tire pressure warning light came on once and the tires were slightly low (3-4 lbs). There has been some oil consumption, but that is by design. So far so good, I love the car. Yeah, just like everyone else I would love more torque especially on the low end, but I knew that this was the case when I preordered the car. The great points outweigh any negatives by far.

2200 miles
No CEL No flooding No Oil light No hot areas including console No squeaks Not sure about AC cycling - don't think so but haven't specifically checked ~16mpg driving aggressively Compliments, thumbs-up and/or lustful looks almost daily Couldn't be happier!!! |

Oh I forgot
countless smiles on my face while driving and around 2 to 3 compliments daily from others |
To all the "No engine flooding"respondants: Was this because you have avoided the situation that tends to cause it, or have any of you actually tried the cold start, switch off, restart?
I think I can learn to live with this, but the accidental stall pulling out of the garage in the morning has me a little concerned, particularly when the wife will drive, as she has not driven a lot of stick. (Of course, having said that, you all know who will actually be the one to do this........) |
no floods
but I have not cold shut off |

(Of course, having said that, you all know who will actually be the one to do this........) I've had no hint of a stall or flood yet, but I have no idea if the car gives you any kind of warning signs when you're running close to disaster. If so, I've had none. |
No A/C cycling
No hot center console No creaks 14.9-23 mpg, depending on whether I'm city/highway Used about a quart and a half of oil in 4800 miles No CEL Tire pressure light for 5 minutes yesterday when it was cold No engine flooding I've only really had the oil light issue, and I'm asking the dealer about that this week when it goes in for the 5,000 mile check-up. Probably won't be fixed before my long trip to Niagara, but as long as we keep the oil full it doesn't come on. I've also cold-started and turned it off a few times, when i wasn't thinking, and it's started back up every time. But I have a feeling I've been lucky in that, so I'm not going to push it if I can help it. |
So far, my car has been trouble-free. I'm using a bit more oil than I was lead to believe I'd be using, (~ 1 qt. per 2300 mi.) but I know this varies with driving habits.
I hate to say it, but even though things are great with my car, after reading about the few bad experiences some have had on this forum, I feel like my car is gonna suddenly vaporize or something. Oh well, it's just my paranoid nature. |
I bought my 8 in Sept. It had a July build.
So far I have..... not flooded the engine. :) (Although I learned my lesson with my 7) I get 17 mpg with 10% highway. :| Center console does not get hot. :) Oil use is <1 qt at 1000 miles. :) Air does not cycle on and off. :) No CEL. :) Coolent leak from bad seal that resulted in a new engine. :( In fact, 1 problem - now solved. :) Lots and lots of positive looks and comments. :) So WTF? A very minor engineering mistake (although very expensive for Mazda), resolved without questions. I love my 8! |

no flooding, althought i cold started and restarted a few times.
center consoles does not get hot oil use is minimal air does cycle on and off but very rare no CEL no oil light no tire pressure light Milleage increase from 16 to 23 mpg after first oil change at 3k miles. It drops back to 17 mpg after that big temperature drop in MD. so far at 7200 miles, in 2.5 months, it has not give me any trouble (knock on wood) I am a happy 8 owner. |
This is such a great car! My experience:
No flooding - and every morning I cold start it, back it out of the garage, then turn it off for a couple of minutes before restarting. I had the oil warning light issue and Mazda replaced the oil pan - the problem hasn't recurred. No problems with air con no CEL I say again - this is a great car ! |
I've had my 8 since August 28th and I now have about 11,000 km of carefree driving including free oil and filter. :D :D :D
I do wish fuel economy was better - but what the hell. |
Bought mine in Oct. I've put 3000 miles on it. 100 miles a day round trip to work.
No floods. No heat. Eats very little oil. Don't know about AC, I fly with roof open. MPG-With this car you never look at mileage. Wasn't bought to be a HYBRID. Love the car, wouldn't trade it for anything. Even choose it over the Z6 Vette. |
