My car isn't silver but my cover is (was)

I left my car in long term parking over the weekend to catch a flight back to LA. Being the obsessive freak that I am I parked far away from other cars at the very end and covered it. There was at least a 30 feet radius of open space around my car. When I came back to my car this morning, I noticed that it was crooked, then I discovered that my car cover at the right rear was in tatters.

Apparently someone over the weekend had hit my car at the rear and displaced it about 1.5 feet laterally at the rear! My cover did it's job well though and sacrificed itself and because of that my bumper is actually flawless. I'm pretty sure if my cover hadn't been there I would be looking at at least a respray for the bumper. As it is, my right rear fender got dented and a bunch of paint cracked off where the bumper meets the fender. My right rear wheel is also fairly scratched up with cuts about an eighth inch into the aluminum. There is some cosmetic cuts in my sidewall and a gash in my right rear splashguard. Of course, I have no idea who did this as it was long term parking at the airport.

My car is Galaxy Gray, but my car cover is silver. It pisses me off that there was plenty of room around my car and I took basically every precaution, yet it was still hit.

That would SO piss me off! Some will say the garage might have recorded the incident on a security camera, but even if they did, tracking down the culprit and getting them to pay would be a huge pain in the ass. If it were my car, I'd just bite the bullet and get it fixed ASAP, and put it behind me.

damn that sucks, but at least the car is okay

did you park it in a corner? where atleast one side is defended with curb or wall?

*edit* nvm, you said 30ft radius..

sorry to hear about it man, get'er fixed up soon!

Parked way back in a corner spot. Granted there wasn't a wall or something next to it, but there was 30 feet of open space in any one direction from the car! Plus, nobody really goes back there since nobody sane wants to walk that far to the shuttle stop.

it's actually not that far fetched for airport security to get some good shots. if you can see who did it they always have much better cameras at the exits to make sure people don't make off without paying so they tend to get good license plate shots. should be easier than most video pulls and once you have the plate it's off to the PD to let them take care of things.

Were you paying for the parking spot. If you were then the airport, or the company that runs the parking for them is responsible (even if they have signs to state the contrary evywhere on the lot) If you were paying for parking they assumed responsibility for your car the moment they started charging you. If not the parking should have been free...

Most likely you could take them to small claims court and they'd probably settle and pay before the hassle.

SUX!

damn, am sorry to hear this happened. totally sux.

in the state of california, if u leave your keys then the facility is automatically liable- period, regardless of whatever they disclaim. it's probably a good idea to talk to whoever is in charge of the parking facility to see what they got on security camera. u'll be able to tell how far u'll get with them by how cooperative they are. if they give u the run around or act like they don't care, then i would just get the car fixed thru ur own insurance. u can then decide later whether u want to spend time & energy pursuing a claim against whoever was responsible. it can be a big headache dealing w/ these scumbags, and sometimes it's easier to just solve the problem yourself and move on- even tho it's totally unfair.

hope u get ur car fixed soon.

Question about insurance. I have uninsured motorist protection that pays if a person that hits me doesn't carry insurance. Geico claims that it doesn't extend to hit and run cases, but a sense a load of bull. Please advise.

matt22 03-06-2007 12:54 PM

HMM, I would have figured hit and run is part of uninsured motorist coverage.
I wonder if I what i am covered for.

TimzSI 03-06-2007 05:45 PM

Fuck man, that sucks. I have an phantom blue, but I bought a silver OEM cover from another rx8'er the week after I bought. I am kinda sketched out on leaving the cover on in public places as well, since it only seems to attract more attention.

Love how you can see the rear plate with it on tho! :D

Detrich 03-06-2007 05:59 PM

i think insurance co.'s differentiate between "comprehensive coverage," which covers any general damage to your car due to unforseen circumstances -vs.- "uninsured motorist coverage," which is specifically when u get into an accident with an uninsured party.

the classification and type of coverage may vary depending on the insurance company.

u should call a geico agent pretending to be a potential customer and have them clarify the difference for u. if their story is consistent, then i think u may have to think about adding comprehensive coverage to ur policy in the future...
