definitely do a car to car before you go out and buy a new battery. those cigarette lighter chargers aren't always very good.

The cigarette lighter type jump is only for mildly discharged systems. You need the much heavier gauge of jumper cables to provide sufficient current to jump-start with a severly drained battery.

I'm still confused about this? When you ask questions on the forums you must divulge ALL of the information you have if you want good informed responses back. Saying stuff like I had it jumped is not at all the same thing as plugging in a cigarette lighter charger.

I'm also fairly baffled that you drive a manual and do not know or have never tried to push start it. That was one of the first lessons I received in my first car. Not calling you out or anything.... just saying I'm really surprised. Oh well everyone has to learn somehow I suppose. Good luck.

A couple things I always teach to manual transmission newbies is how to push-start and also how to use the e-brake on hills so as not to roll back when moving from a stop.

My sister got her first car when she was 16 (I was 12). My dad took us both out and taught us how to drive the car. His first thing was showing us the grabbing point of the clutch and how to use that to know how much gas to give it. Then it was the push start/rolling start, then it was learning how to hold the car on a hill with minimal gas.

Try car to car (make sure the other car is running) and then jump start it.

You'll probably need a new battery anyway at this point, but you never know. Get it running to confirm its the battery and then take it to an autozone and have them test it...

there are a lot of things about this scenario that have me baffled. but someone that doesn't realize that they drained the battery by leaving their trunk open, knows none of their electrical works, is still unsure why their car won't start, gets information that it's probably a dead battery, says they've tested it even though their idea of a jump is a cigarette lighter jump, and wonders if they should just go buy a new battery b/c the "jump" didn't work is probably a good candidate for not knowing how to push start a car.

I'm pretty sure that performing a proper hill start (i.e. using the handbrake) is still part of the British driving test. It was when I lived there *cough* years ago.

Oh, and isLoTz, do not just connect the jumper cables from one battery to the other. Hydrogen explodes when you show it a spark.

I dont think 120W from the cig ligher would power the whole starter motor

anyways, jump using jump cables between cars, leave the other car on and go start your car.

take the car for a blast on the interstate for half hour after you start it up, go to autozone test the battery out

batteries dont always need to be replaced when they are dead unless there are symptoms that its not holding charge, they are rechargable.

i want to smack you OP... wasted 5 minutes of my life cause you don't know how to jump a car...

Now that you can drive, get your battery's capacity checked and it wouldn't hurt to voltmeter your battery terminals when running to assure ~14v Alternator output.
