My 8 is a goner

So long story short, I thought my 8 simply flooded but when i could not get it to start, took the car to a highly respected local shop, NeptuneSpeed for a look. Front rotor compression is good at around 8.0 but the rear rotor was at 5.9. Dead. 2004 Rx8 GT. Second owner, bought in 2016 with 18K miles on the odo. Really loved the car and always planned on keeping her until something like this happened. Well, been on this forum mainly learning and reading since 2003. All good things must come to an end I suppose.

Hopefully someone local that has the skills and interest to rebuild the engine will be interested in buying the car.

now that we've completely hijacked this thread.

daniel: no desire to get it rebuilt and back on the road? Are you just going to sell it?

=). I dont mind the hijacking of thread.

Hmmm, thought about getting a rebuild and still mulling it over, but I think I am not sure I want to go through that process for something that might cost 4-6K total or more. There may be more mechanically inclined folks that could go through a rebuild and do more on their own to save a bit of money. I am do not have those skills -_- . If I sell it, probably will take pictures over the weekend and post it up.

It seems like a lot of work to part out.

What do I do with the large parts that dont sell? Just drop it off at a junk yard?

*yes, all newb questions* lol

Honestly most scrap yards will come pick it up and you'll still get paid. Not sure what scrap prices are down your way but i know here they are down. $2.00 per 100lbs IIRC.

Plus your in CA. MANY people will be able to come pick up stuff. So you have location working for you as well. Another thing is the 8 really isn't difficult to tear down.. ANYONE can disassemble anything.

That made me think of Johnny5.... I need to watch short circuit....

Ok, even though my wife won't like the 8 in the garage, you have me interested in this project now Travis. Perhaps it is a good way to get a higher price for the car.

Well, look at the condition of the interior and exterior parts, and what blown RX8s sell for around there, and the numbers should pretty much make the decision for you. But I would suggest you first just look around for a good used engine or a rebuild and make sure you know what that cost would be.

^^ I have researched that a bit. A quality rebuild from Mazmart or similar vendor would be in the $3K neighborhood, plus shipping which probably adds $600-800 there and back, plus housings and such. I already asked my shop guy NeptuneSpeed how much he would charge for an install, and it was $1600 which I think is pretty reasonable for quality work. So that will get me over $6K all in for a result that won't cause me to wonder if my 8 will blow in short order.

I think blown 8s are only going for $2.5K or so here. Need to research that more.

Worth is subjective. From a financial stand point it's not a good idea but it is a personal decision.

Put a rebuilt engine in and have the car for another 75-100k or many more if you maintain it from the start miles for 6k or less. It will give many many miles of joy and excitement. Or, buy a known good used engine and install it. The thought of parting out a perfectly good car sickens me. The engine went on my 8 and I replaced it. I love the car and that's what a true enthusiast does. They take care of their car and do what it takes to get it back on the road. If you can't afford to fix it, sell it to someone who will. Parting a perfectly good car is just terrible. You know deep down you love that car. Take care of her the right way.
