I won against my friends 00' stang GT. From a stop or roll, my 8 walked away from him as we approached tripple digit speeds, and he is a pretty good driver. We even switched cars , and he pulled away in my 8 with me in his stang. Key is to launch the 8 at 5000 rpm, well at least for me it is. Anything below that you will bog.

Never mind the 220hp 4.6l versions, even the basic 260hp stangs timed mid 14's and at 95-96 mph traps. Either way, it's a drivers race more often than not.

The new generations are way faster in the straights.

The newer 260hp stangs are timed at 14.0-14.2 with a 98-100 mph traps. The newer stang would have the advantage.

Really?! wow that's kinda shocking, not to dis the RX8, but I didn't think it had that kind of potential stock...well excluding the kn filter or intake.

Keef 07-16-2007 10:46 AM

I've dragged agains't a new Mustang GT... Dunno if it was an automatic or manual, but we stayed head too head all the way till 100

...not always that fast, but yeah sometimes, and the 8 never did better than a 14.4 at 96.

Roaddemon 07-17-2007 09:23 AM

I pulled on a 2004 mustang GT from 50 to???. I think the Rx8 will kill any late 90's stang gt on the track. The stang does not have anything much but torque.:)

XDEEDUBBX 07-17-2007 10:29 AM

the RXS will win, it's unbeatable!

MyRXdrug 07-17-2007 11:21 AM

My friend has a 95 stang with a K&N Cone. I don't know if he has any other mods, but I'm pretty sure he can pull on me with ease.
He has to tell me his kill of the day. Sometimes a SRT-4 or another Stang. We raced a new MT 6 cyl stang. Talk about a scary ride.
He's shown me pics of hitting the needle on the speedometer, that's past 240! and the front passenger tire was a freakin' donut! I called him retarded and told him he's lucky to be alive.
Just my 2 cents on stang drivers lol
I have to admit though, it's a FORD (Fix Or Repair Daily).
He counters with First On Race Day.

If this counts for anything, raced a .........deleted........on the highway in my.........be careful, ladies, you can get banned for street racing stories......S........the wind was to my back (which probably helped my top speed).

Renesis07 07-17-2007 06:47 PM

Speaking straight number stats, a 98 mustang GT is running around a 14.4 1/4, and an rx8 is running 14.5. These numbers obviously will vary due to driver error and only reflect straight line acceleration. Stock the RX-8 would prob handle better. It would prob come down to the driver but in my opinion, I think the RX8 listed above would take it.

nmarz77 07-23-2007 11:05 AM

There is a little more to consider on the 96-98 Mustang GT than just the times posted by magazines. Two major things that could slow down a mustang to run a 15 second quarter instead of a mid 14 second quarter back then were the AOD transmissions or on a manual tranny the possibility of crappy gearing. Stock the car came with 2.73's which made the car a dog and would be hard to hit a 14 second quarter. If the car came with the upgraded 3.08 coupled with a decent launch, they could easily run mid 14's all day without much effort.

Car and Driver and Road and Track do not always get into these details in the magazines and a lot of times the car's track times stated in the mag suffer because of it, without the general public knowing any different. For instance, I owned a 1989 Mustang GT. R&T and C&D showed the car would only run low to mid 15's. Funny because I took my stock GT to the track and was ripping off consistant 14.6's with a best of 14.4. Later I found an article in Hot Rod Magazine stating they ran a 14.5.

Moral of the story? Don't believe everything those magazines state. Oh yeah and the other moral is that you have a fighting chance of beating a stang in the 1/4.

Shinka-Dono 07-23-2007 11:19 AM

I'm sure you all remember the Car and Driver lightning lap done in the November 2006 issue (laps done at VIR). I'll get right to the point:

Mustang GT 3:20.9 @ 75.3 mph.

RX-8 3:19.0 @ 76.0 mph.

refugeefrompistons 07-23-2007 11:37 AM

wtf... If you read the first post, he is comparing the 98 mustang to a current model rx-8. I guess a majority would consider them equal in a drag race. I'm gonna guess the gaps within the gearbox on the mustang (I know the current mustang have 5 gears so I would assume the 98 does too) would hinder it to a large extent. Otherwise, the heavier car with more horsepower and torque than the rx8, is quite comparable in a drag race/

VASasha 07-23-2007 11:56 AM

If there is no driver skill involved then just by looking at the manufacturer's stock #'s on the cars we should be able to tell who would win.

Shinka-Dono 07-23-2007 12:04 PM

...and he also later clarified "on the track" to mean a drag race. My bad. I assumed something with turns in it. Then I assumed the '98 handles even worse than the current generation mustang.

05zoom 07-23-2007 02:06 PM

My previous car was an upgraded 99 Mustang GT, and it defidently had way more power. The torque was way better, but it could mess with you and you could burnout a tad too much if you were not paying attention taking off.

I like both cars..........I think it would be close though, if both were completely stock. Modded, a stang is cheaper to build up, and has a ton more options to add.

delhi 07-23-2007 02:57 PM

Hmm I wonder which one will win.

I owned an '05 Mustang GT......I had her 18 months, and she sat on the Mazda lot for months, after I traded her for my '06 SHINKA. I never looked back, and have no regrets.

I do know for a fact that I'd get stomped in a straight 1/4 mile, but most 'Stangs just wouldn't stand a chance in the twisties. They just weren't built for that.

Renesis07 07-23-2007 08:52 PM

Im still going with the 8 in this race, I think some people are forgeting were talking about a TRACK, the two cars are about equal in a straight line and we all know the 8 will dominate a 98 mustang around corners. I think the 8 will take it.

If you read towards the beginning of the thread he states that the "track" he is talking about is on the dragstrip....so no twisties are involved.

totally a track's race. number of turns and length of straights will totally make or break this one.

jrm07211987 07-24-2007 03:21 PM

Stock for stock

Quarter Mile = Mustang Wins
Road Track = RX8 Wins

When modded, it could go the complete opposite. If you build a stang for corners it could take an 8 and if you build a RX8 for straights then it could take a stang.

Renesis07 07-24-2007 07:28 PM

ok, if its a dragstrip (sorry if I missed that), its a drivers race. In my opinion, speaking straight stats, this would be a damn good race to watch on a drag strip. If the 8 launches at 8K ( bad for clutch, I know), itll have a good shot at taking it. Im STILL going with the 8!!!!!!! mustang> :boxing_sm <RX8
