Muffler back fire

Ever since the upgrade of ECU, my RX-8 is expering idling muffler back fire.....This occurs after some high revs of rpm. Basically after high revs, waiting at the red lights, you can hear the slight "pa" sound coming out of muffler in an interval of 1 second each time...and when "pa" sound occurs, the car will shock a little~~~ anyone has the same issue? My car is stock w/o any modification. thanks.

Request a RE-Flash.

Not sure what you are talking about. Are you saying that you got your ECU re-flashed (from Mazda/dealer) or that you have a piggyback ECU modification ? If it is from your dealer, then like EF said go back & talk to the dealer & get it re-flashed. If it is from an ECU mod you are running too rich, and the extra gas is not burning up, so get it tuned out by a mechanic.

I got my flash from the Mazda Dealer. Actually, with the first upgrade of ECU, my RX8 lost all the hosepower and the car started getting muffler backfire. Took the car back, the dealer did re-flash the ECU for me and changed two pistons. (They indicated that somehow after flash, two pistons went dead). Now the car has got the horsepower back, but the muffle back fire is still there~~~ It seems that Mazda dealer has no clue either~~~ Help!!

My RX-8 only has 10,000 miles on the clock~~ fairly new.

i hope to god you mean the dealer changed two spark plugs.... if you think the dealer changed two pistons, you and the dealer need to buy a vowel...

wouldn't that be normal to get some back fire after a high rev in neutral?

Renesis07 11-20-2007 10:15 AM

mine backfires, but only after revving

Uncivilizedracer 11-20-2007 10:57 AM

Renesis07 11-20-2007 12:42 PM

Uncivilizedracer 11-20-2007 01:23 PM

Mine gets the 'pop pop' when shifting. But that was ONLY AFTER I added the aftermarket exhaust

Renesis07 11-20-2007 02:07 PM

how much $$ were the springs uncivilizedracer??

Uncivilizedracer 11-20-2007 02:59 PM

$90.00 they are regular like 140

Spinning Sushi 11-20-2007 03:05 PM

Wow, so much thread hijacking on springs.
Anyhow, I get that too after hitting redline in neutral. It pops consecutively all the way back down to about 3k RPM. It's normal :)

Herblenny 11-20-2007 03:06 PM

LOL! Pistons..

I see this pretty common on RX7 forum and any other forums I've been when people are having issues..

First, you need to be more specific to what you have done to your car.. ie, do you have a aftermarket cat back, stock, mp, etc.. Things are that will tell you if its normal or not.

Second, learn about your car and do a search... most of the time, same topic have been covered and you might find that answer. Or at least you could ask better question.

Third, seach again:)

But regarding your problem... If you took any of the cats you have, it will pop or see flames. Rotary Engines like to run richer and at decel you tend to have excess fuel that ignites when exiting the exhaust system.

ahh it sounds so great .. .. . . . . .. .. . .doesnt it

Renesis07 11-21-2007 08:45 PM

no it doesn't.....jk
