How is the market for used rx8's right now?

Due to many of life's miracles and a huge mortgage and huger property tax bill, looks like i'm going to have to sell my RX8. Easiest way to free up cash

My question is those of you selling, or having sold your RX8 in the past couple of months what kind of action are you seeing or did you see? Is there any hope?

I've enjoyed this car so much, I find it hard to believe it would be hard to sell, but common sense tells me otherwise.

What say you rx8club?

Market is great for buyers.

I got an 04 Sport with ~10k miles on it ~3-4months ago in pristine condition for ~17,500 out the door at a dealer.

Think carefully about your decision. We don't know your full circumstances, but if has to do with the costs of fuel, any savings you'll make with a replacement vehicle will be inconsequential to the loss on the sale of your RX-8...

Not to mention the immediate loss in value of any replacement vehicle....and the loss of excitement and thrills in owning an 8.

You'll know whats best for your circumstances and its sad, but I guess its going to happen to all of us one day.

Its a big call....good luck.

Give it a shot and put it on the market, it's the only way you'll really know. Just don't get your hopes up since the resale market for RX-8s has always seemed pretty weak.

Yeah, it seems that it appeals to a limited market. One of those cars you have to drive before you can really appreciate it. It's fuel economy vs power numbers don't look very good compared to some other cars. Mazda hasn't done the best job of getting the news out on some of the positive aspects of the car.

I've got a copy of their 07 brochure - if they'd put some of the info they have in there into commercials, they might sell more of them. They point out things like how the rotary allows you to have a small sports car with seating for 4 adults and a decent size trunk. They also explain how it can change direction very quickly and easily due to the light weight and positioning of the rotary engine. They could also talk about how lightweight it is compared to some other cars, but they are probably concerned that they will scare Americans away talking about it being lightweight due to safety concerns.

I think at least in this country cars like the 8 will always appeal to a very limited market.

Captain Obvious signing off.

Maybe a crappy 1st post here..... but just picked up an '05 GT with 25k (previous owner commuted Dallas to Lubbock a lot in it and you can tell by the new condition of the tires) and EVERY option but Nav for $17,348 at a local Ford dealer. Kind of happened on it by accident, but had been looking at the RX-8 and Audi TT for a while. Great car and great platform to work with. Probably gets a small turbo next year to make for it's only shortcoming IMHO, which is lack of 'real' sports car power. Amazing driver though, still kind of quick if you abuse the clutch, can fit real people in the back for short trips and a trunk that can handle real trips to Sam's club This one joins a crew cab Tundra and Aprilia SL1000R in the garage. Should be a fun year....

KBB "Trade In" should give you a close idea on what you can get.

No one really listens to KBB value.

For Seller, the kbb listed value is ALWAYS LOWER than actual market price.

For Buyer, the kbb listed value is ALWAYS HIGHER than actual market price.

Selling it private party, expect about $15,000 if you can find a buyer. Most like to use a dealership due to financing and having someone to go back to in case of any issues.

Take it to Carmax and see how much they will give you. There's no obligation. I'm sure you'll be disappointed in the amount they'll offer, but at least it is an easy sale.

decision to sell has nothing to do with gas mileage or anything wrong with the car, there will be no replacement vehicle.. It's my toy, and we can't afford a toy right now

True if you use "Private Party" value; try using the "Trade-In" or "Wholesale" values; pretty close to "Market"

When I traded in my truck for my 8 in Feb 06, I actually got higher than KBB trade in for my truck. Of course maybe it was because I was buying the bastard stepchild of the 8 community (silver 4AT), and they wanted to get rid of it so bad that they gave me more for my trade in. Plus I considered my truck to be in only "good" condition due to a couple of small dings and dents, but I tend to take very good care of my vehicles compared to the general public. As I'm guessing most of us do here.

You know, come to think of it, I don't recall even seeing the RX-8 as a subject of any Mazda TV commercials- going back at least a year that I can remember. They haven't advertized this car in the broadcast media at all.

I assume "speed channel" is on some kind of subscription TV? I only watch TV about 6 or 8 hours per month so I don't have cable or dish or anything like that. And then it's mostly news or PBS.

That does answer my question, though, subscription TV isn't "broadcast" media. Mazda is apparently selling the 8 to a niche market exclusively.

Yeah, Speed isn't a bare bones offering through cable or dish companies. I think it's roughly a 5 dollar a month premium here, although they bundle it with some lame movie station to make it look like they're not ripping you completely open.

If you watch such little tv, how can you know how much advertising of the 8 is going on? Mazda isn't likely to advertise the 8 much on PBS.

I can't say for sure because while I watch a fair bit of tv, I don't watch many commercials. The DVR is one of the best inventions ever!

Looking at the "rides" in your sig, the best way to save money is to get rid of the '81 Wife. Those are definitely more of a money hog than the RX8

Not that it helps you out, but we just bought our '04 GT with 28,000 miles for $15,750. Good luck with the sale.
