Missing cap?

Hey guys,

A few weeks ago I went to my mazda dealer to get a warranty repair done on my 8. When I picked up my car the service manager said that they used my car as a "guinea pig" and flushed the gas out of the A/C and re-filled it cuz they were testing a new machine. I didn't like him doing that without consulting me first, but usually good with me so I didn't say anything to him about it, plus I got a "free" A/C flush. A couple of days ago, when I was checking my oil, I noticed that a cap was missing....I think it's related to the A/C but here are two pics I took of it. Can anyone post pics of their engine bay to see what kinda cap is supposed to be there, so I can make sure I'll know what to ask for from the service manager.

Thanks guys and God bless you all! :)

Ben.

It's the cap they took of to play with your AC system. Go to the dealership, grab the service tech, pop your hood and just point.

Mazurfer 07-31-2008 09:03 PM

 Yep......that should do it!

ChristInBen 07-31-2008 09:07 PM

Since I've been without it for about two weeks, would it have caused any damage?

Mazurfer 07-31-2008 09:11 PM

No, but get it capped. No worries.
You'd have to work hard to push in that center pin which is basically what makes the seal. If there is any dirt in there, have them quickly blow that out before they cap it.
I know it was probably and honest mistake about the cap, but at least let them know that they should have called you before touching anything else on the car......and......oh BTW......it cost you time and money to have to come back in because they forgot the cap. Not that you'd expect anything out of it, but they should be reminded of these facts.

Yeah, thanks for the advice dude, I 'll definitely let them know that. God-willing they will do a good job on putting the cap back, and I will let them know not to touch my car again unnecessarily during a service without my consent. Thanks again dudes. :)

Car is @ dealership for 3 days so I cant look at it now. but it should be a gray color plastic cap with the letter "H" on it or soemthing.

ken-x8 07-31-2008 11:06 PM

Gray plastic, as nygps says, but it will have an "L" on it. That's the low side line.

Look to the passenger side of the plastic radiator tank in the front of the car. There is another fitting, which should have the same kind of cap but with an "H" on it. If they lost the low side cap, they might have lost the high side cap as well.

If the dealer is far away, you can probably pick up replacements at an auto parts store. Consumer oriented places like Autozone or Pep Boys have a rack of a brand like "Help" with little stuff like that.

That's what you get for leaving your car with the dealer, instead of keeping it safe at home with you. ;)

This thread gave me an excuse to go out to the garage and spend a few quality minutes with Zoomy. :)

Glad I could help! lol :P

Thanks again for all your help guys! :)

Mazurfer 08-01-2008 08:18 PM

Yeah........I didn't go look cause of my broken foot and ANYTHING is kind of a pain in the rear. I wasn't sure if it was low side or high side, so I didn't say.
And.....I could be mistaken, but most vehicles I have seen the caps are two different colors. Guess I will review when I check my oil tomorrow just to see if they are different colors because I can't remember! :banghead:

it will b ok without the cap but definately go back and get it capped and complain that they used ur car without permission and try to get something free haha......mazdaspeed intake or someting haha.....but everything should b ok

They've always been the same color on vehicles I've looked at. They're both gray on my RX-8. "H" and "L" markings are the first time I've seen any difference between the high and low caps. But this is also the first time I've looked at the fittings on an R-134a system.

wow. That's one dirty engine bay. Are most stock cars in that condition?

I can eat off my motor.

I usually like to use a plate to eat off of. Engine bays are usually where the engine is located, thus the name :uhh:

Well, I do work and spend time with my family, so as much as I'd like to clean my engine bay enough to eat off my motor, I think I should probably spend that time washing the car and cleaning the interior first! :p:

LOL, I have to agree with you that plates are an essential component to eat off of! :)

UPDATE: I went to the dealership of Friday and the service manager put both caps back. They are two gray caps marked 'H' and 'L'. Now she's all good! :)
