Anyone know who sells it? I have seen threads on it....Consesus seems to be that it doesn't have as much gear box noise as others. Thanks

there's a reason almost everyone has the AFE STS.

I know a couple of guys that have them on their 8.

Truemagellen does and he didn't realize it until he was working on another 8. :D:

It sits lower than the AFE shifter.

Nope.

It isn't as solid as the AFE shifter though because the MS shifter retains the rubber bushing like the stock shifter.

Its not a rubber bushing. Its a rubber body, like the OEM shifter.
Its odd that it is physically shorter than the AFE shifter, but they decided to keep the fulcrum point near the stock position for less of a reduction in throw.

Philodox had one of the first AFE shifters - he gave up his MS for it.

So a person could say the body of the shifter acts as the bushing? :confused:

I thought Richard had said that he did away with the rubber bushing which is why the AFE is so solid, and resonates some transmission / synchro noise. (which most everyone including me can handle and a person comes to appreciate with the AFE)

The body of the AFE shifter is not coated like the OEM or MS.
There is a polyester ring that attaches the insulating boot, but that is it.

So the moral of the story is the AFE is probably better (disregarding price)? Short shifter isn't high on my priorities but I'd probably get one sooner or later, and wondering which one I'd enjoy more.

so now the real question, how on earth did an MS short shifter show up in my vehicle :)

it makes a bit of a whirrring noise. If you enjoy the noises your rotary engine makes, this adds more to the symphony. I would not install something that "fixes" the additional noise it makes. It's not loud or anything either...

The OEM and the MS look the same (other than the missing inch or so of height on the MS).
Or do you mean something else?

I bought my car with a couple thousand miles on it. The shifter sits very low...with the base of the stock knob below the shift boot ring. I thought it was factory for some reason til I drove a friends. I love it sitting low...and found it very ackward driving with the higher one.

The previous owner had no records of any modifications done and just left the car in the garage an entire winter then bought a BMW M5.

So either I have the MS short shifter or my transmission is dropped a bit, which would not be good. From a basic visual inspection the transmission is fine. I've never driven another car with the MS shifter only the AFE shifter so I'm not 100% sure what is going on.

Have you verified the mounting angle of the PPF?

Not with a proper measurement, only by visual inspection sadly.

I hope to check it when the weather gets a bit warmer. Thanks for reminding me to do this.

A 1/2" of movement forward or back in the mounting point can move the tailshaft of the tranny up or down almost 2 inches.
Its also not a very nice thing to do to your CV joints.

You don't have the MS STS on your car. The MS version is about 1/4" TALLER than stock:

It seems people hear "short" and forget the part about "throw" ...

Intakedrotary has the MS shifter in his 8 and it sits low just like Truemagellen's but like you say MazdaManiac if the power plant frame is lower than spec it would lower the transmission which would in turn lower the shifter on the interior since it is directly connected to the transmission. :confused:

The adjustment value which is read from the front tunnel member threaded hole to the PPF is 2.16 - 2.24 in.
