Mazda Zoom Zoom Live (was Rev-It-Up?)

Looks similar to what Rev-It-Up was.

Hyperborea 08-21-2005 11:24 AM

I never went to a "Rev-It-Up" so I can't compare but I was at the San Francisco area ZoomZoom Live event yesterday (Saturday). There were 3 different events: 1) RX-8 on a short auto-x course (~40s); 2) MX-5 on a short auto-x course with golf balls in a bowl on the hood that need to be balanced; and 3) Mazda 3, 5 and 6 on another auto-x course. Throw in some static displays of the bits of the new MX-5, some cars that you could sit in and look over, and some hot dogs and cotton candy.

The MX-5 auto-x course with the balls on hood was called Jinba-ittai (horse and rider as one in Japanese). Not only did you have to make it around the course in a set time you also had to keep these 3 golf balls from rolling out of this bowl that was mounted on the hood. If you let all 3 balls out of the bowl you got a 10s penalty. The time to beat was 38s. Well, the line up was about 30 minutes so I had time to watch the course and I realized that if I forgot about the balls and took the penalty that I should be able to make it around the course and still meet that time. The balls were lost on the first corner and I made it in under 38s including my 10s penalty.

The MX-5 is a nice little roadster. Quite a lot of fun and I think a nice improvement on the Miata - a little better room inside, more power, the styling is nice.

sounds fun! cant wait till this saturday when i go!

mazdabob 08-21-2005 07:00 PM

I went to the Zoom Zoom Live today (Sunday), and, as of 2:00PM, I had the fastest time on the Jinba-Ittai Experience - 34 seconds. My second time, the announcer guy told everyone that I had the record, so far, and to watch me - no pressure! I did 33.999, but on the last turn, I lost one of my balls. Yes, it was painful. The new MX-5 is quite nice! :D

PUR NRG 08-21-2005 08:00 PM

Incredibly long lines for every event. Averaged just above an hour in line per drive. Scored 41.70X on the performance course driving the MX-5. Time to beat was 42 sec. Top time of day (that I know of) was 41.648. Overall a fun event except for the long waits.

You had to pay for Revitup so the lines were reasonable (Tampa FL) Got to do everything more than once.

Hyperborea 08-22-2005 12:15 AM

The lineups got longer as the day wore on. I was there reasonably early (~11am) and it wasn't too bad though it would have been better to have arrived even earlier.

DreRX8 08-22-2005 07:35 AM

Where the cars manual or autos?

SilverStreak 08-22-2005 09:55 AM

I went to both Revitup events in Philadelphia they were very well run both years. All the cars were automatics, I'm sure it will be the same with this event. I just signed up for Englishtown along with my son and two son-in-laws. It should be a blast. So far none of them have beaten the old man, so we'll see what happens this November.

We arrived at 9:45 and every line was consistently over an hour.

They have both manual and automatics which was a pleasant surprise. Both the RX-8 and MX-5 are sporty cars so that was a big change from trying to flog a Mazda3 around the course.

I was a little disappointed. They should have had more cars so we wouldn't have to wait in the line an hour and a half just to drive a car for 40 some odd seconds. I got there pretty early too.

Astral 08-22-2005 10:53 AM

Hmm. I am registered for 9am for the Boston event. I'll try arriving there around 8:30. Who knows, I may get to drive the Rx-8 twice in the span of half an hour :)

Astral 08-22-2005 10:54 AM

Also, did they hand out any $500 off your next Mazda purchase coupons or anything like that? Last time I was at Rev It Up!, they did hand those out.

PUR NRG 08-22-2005 11:31 AM

I don't think more cars would have helped. They had two or three cars on track at all times for the performance and jinba ittai courses (call it every 20-30 seconds). The matched time was the only slow course. For some reason the starter waited until the one car on track was either finished or almost finished before sending another car out.

The only way I can see improving waits is by reducing the number of people attending each day. There were some people who arrived mid- to late-afternoon who only got to try one or two events before closing.

They do have $500 off your next purchase offers good until december. Here's a tip: bring a stopwatch or something else with a second hand to help with the matched time event. It won't guarantee hitting the match time but it will keep you from overshooting by a second or more. I didn't have one and got lucky with a 43.954 time. Time to match was 44.000 seconds. Like the performance event, I came in second for the day; someone else got 45.955 shortly after my run.

So why do they have people pick a time when they sign up, if they don't linit it? That stinks.

PUR NRG 08-22-2005 02:00 PM

They do limit it. Problem is their limit is too high.

We pre-registered for the RX-8 event as soon as we arrived - go to the front of the line and ask the employee for a reservation sticker. We got one for when we estimated that we would be finished the Jinba-ittai event. This meant that when we went to the RX-8 event we went to this short line of pre-registered folks. There were about 10 people ahead of us and maybe half of them were waiting on the single automatic car so we jumped ahead of them too. Not a very long wait.

For the jinba-ittai we waited maybe 30 minutes and used the time to eat our free hotdog and watch the track. Perhaps we caught a lull in the crowd? The lineup definitely was longer when we passed by after the RX-8 event.

mazdabob 08-23-2005 05:01 PM

Does anyone know when the results will be available? I put in my ID #, and it says "coming soon". I think I got cheated on my last run. They gave me 25, and I think I should have gotten 50 points. I had 33.999 plus 2 seconds for losing a ball. The time to beat was 38.

PUR NRG 08-23-2005 05:39 PM

One announcer said wednesday.
