if your engine has truly failed compression, and you are out of warranty coverage, then consider a rebuilt by these reputable rotary rebuilders. Wont cost you anything close to $8000 !

Another place got back to me (not Pettit).

They said it's better to install a Mazda reman. $5,650 for engine and install, plus whatever else is unforseen.

Good deal? I'd also probably have to pay $1,000 to ship it over there.

Paul of Mazmart, a top Mazda parts supplier and RX8 parts vendor, had a recent thread here where he took apart a recent Mazda reman engine and found quality work and virtual all new parts. So if the rebuilder supplying you with a Mazda factory reman has a recent one, then yes it is likely a good quality engine ,and at a good price if it includes installation. I personally put in a Mazda reman engine in my 2008 RX8 last fall 2016 (Mazda and dealer authorized with two weeks left on my warranty), and it has been strong from day one.

At this point though, with shipping, I'm getting close to what the dealer is offering.

The dealer claimed the engine is brand new, I assume they don't know what they are talking about and it's a reman.

If the reman is $5650 (including installation) and shipping is $1000, that total is still nearly $1400 less than the dealer. Save the money and replace the clutch while the engine is out. That can be done just for the parts as the labor should be included since everything will be apart down there anyway. That is what I got with my reman, i paid for the clutch parts and the labor was included at no extra cost.

BTW which rebuilder did you settle on doing business with ? I would run that clutch replacement by them.

Thanks, I'll run that by them. I also need to find out if they'll buy the core from me (assuming it's in good shape).

I sent a bunch of emails and only Banzai has responded so far. 4-6 weeks turnaround time. I'll try calling the others tomorrow but I get the sense that they might be backed up.

I just purchased a reman engine and picked it up for $2800, the reman engine comes with a new flywheel, and a full gasket kit (all UIM gaskets and fuel injector O-rings, etc), new water pump, thermostat, etc. Mine came with new oil pan, front cover, housings, and the irons could be new by looking at them and having no wear marks? I also picked up a series 2 trans for $200 from a guy who didn't know it was a series 2 but he bought the car non-working so let's hope its good.

I purchased a CA car and everything came apart easy, It really didn't take long to get the engine/trans out. I am about to put everything back in here shortly.

TheKdog ,yes try the others ,you might be surprised at a good deal you might get. And yes get any core discount ,by all means. With just a little effort and being a savvy shopper, you will find the right deal, I am sure. These folks all need business.

Another issue is that it takes these shops 4-6 weeks to complete the work.

So I'm looking at $5,600 + $800 shipping + rental car for a month + driving back from Indiana or whever to TX.

Vs. $8,000 for dealer to get it done in 7-10 days.

Still waiting for a few others to respond.

It also sounds like the remans are better now. Banzai says they have "new rotor housings, rotors and the latest two piece dual spring 2mm OEM apex seals."

Shipping should only be about 200 ish both ways if you ship it freight on a pallet. It cost me 800 to ship my RX4 from NJ to TN... an engine should be significantly less. (unless you're talking sending them the car.)

Standard rebuild at rotary resurrection starts at 1600 (depends on what parts are worn out) with a 2~4 week turnaround depending on how busy he is. You have to pull the motor for that price though. additional 1200 if you want him to pull the motor.

That was for shipping the car.

Although I wonder if I can just buy the engine and pay the dealer only for labor. It sounds like they are marking up the engine.

Mazdatrix has remans for $3,394.75

I ordered it there and am getting it fixed at the connected dealer (it is the parts department of Jeff Haas Mazda).

I wanted to go to an non dealer, but now I won't have to ship it across the country and wait 4-6 weeks.

It's also the dealership I bought my rx8 10 years ago.

Your anti-theft is being tripped. Have your key programmed for the car at the dealer (or use another key).

Oh, no. That would be a short somewhere. Check for wires rubbing around the ignition coils, but if you don't find anything there, you'll need a wiring diagram and patience to follow each wire looking for a break. But you say it runs if you jump start it? that makes no sense if the relay is blown.

My 2004 Automatic RX-8, with 99,000 miles is on it's third engine, with Mazda picking up the tab. The engine failed due to previously mentioned factory oil injection issues, then a bad reman. But my latest engine has low compression readings and hot start problems.
