Yep, the paint sucks.

dmc27 06-15-2007 10:03 AM

it's thin. the only chips I have after 16 months are on my roof. can you guess how close I follow other cars on the road?

jones75254 06-16-2007 11:58 AM

Yeah, got small chips everywhere up front, sux

Transam kid 01 06-16-2007 12:20 PM

I drive the Garden State Parkway to school so I have these chips all over....sucks :(

VRZOOMZOOM 06-16-2007 01:40 PM

Get a 3M clear bra?? Or should have put one on prior to delivery of the car. Chips are part of the car life though.......going to get some chips at some point in the car life. 8 meant to be driven not really a museum piece. :)

loc 06-16-2007 01:55 PM

I had the same problem with my WRX, if you sneezed on it the paint would come off.

I ordered some touch up paint from a Mazda dealership and also ordered the Langka repair kit today for my RX8. Anyone else used this, and if so, how were the results?

I've used Langka. It's certainly better than simply blobbing on touch-up paint by itself—but you can still see the chips. They're less visible, though. If I get many more chips I might just bite the bullet one day and have the hood/front bumper repainted—and then drive immediately to the 3M clear bra place.

shaunv74 06-16-2007 07:43 PM

yeah. Low hooded sports car + too many idiots in SUVs=paint chips all over. Some kind of clear bra protectant is the way to go. It's similar to the stuff that is in front of your rear wheel wells.

machfive 06-16-2007 08:09 PM

Paint

Great. My car is only 2 months old and no chips yet. Just a matter of time I guess.

04BB8 06-16-2007 09:40 PM

Yep chips are just a part of owning a 8, that and damn windshield dings from back road caravans.

imput1234 06-16-2007 09:53 PM

I have way tooo many chips, oh well. Thats driving. :)

speedmaniac 06-16-2007 11:31 PM

The paint is great...

RotaryResurrection 06-17-2007 01:34 AM

Mazda has never been able to paint a car. Every original paint rx7 I see looks like dogshit unless it is black. Many white 2nd gen rx7s have entire areas of paint peel off in sheets or chips 1-6" in diameter. Red 2nd and 3rd gen rx7s turn pink. My wife's 99 millenia which has seen mainly interstate driving has paint chipping and clear peeling in spots on the hood, roof, and mirrors.

In contrast, every GM truck I have owned has had excellent paint for it's age, with no peeling clear or chipping base color.

Rich Linder 06-17-2007 03:38 PM

I'll second that.

I've owned two RX-7's and currently own a '00SE Miata. While the paint didn't look bad new, it is thin, it is not durable and it chips easily.

I don't know why the RX-8 would/should be different than any of the other Mazda models in that respect.

Mazda paint quality is certainly not one of thier good points.

pdxhak 06-17-2007 05:47 PM

My front has chips all over it. It sucks. It does not help that Oregon that use gravel on the road when it snows. Even after the snow melts the gravel is on the road for at least another week.

Jethro Tull 06-17-2007 09:42 PM

Winter is the worst

In Utah, they sand and salt the roads in winter. My '80 RX-7 front end looked pretty pitted after only the first winter.

This time I'm doing things differently. I just got my BN '07 8 in March and plan on garaging it from November through March. No driving the 8 during winter; I have my old Explorer for that.

AJ's Shinka 06-17-2007 10:03 PM

Yeah stay away from suvs and such.

dynamho 06-17-2007 10:06 PM

If Mazda paint sux, enlighten us on which maker formulates good paint. From my experience, all auto paint seem pretty much the same.

CarAndDriver 06-18-2007 01:07 AM

Whats new?

Targatheory 06-18-2007 09:12 PM

Anyone have a leather bra on? I'm planning on picking one up off of ebay, I just hope it doesn't look ridiculous.

Teckfall 06-18-2007 09:31 PM

I think the paint is pretty decent for oem paint job. I have 7k on my 8 and there are a few small chips on the front bumper, but living on Long Island its impossible not to have any chips. All I have to say its a 100x better then Nissan's paint. Between my Spec V, and two Altimas my family has the paint is terrible. Even trying to wash it was a horror story. I dread it whenever My mom ask if I can wash her car for her. The paint was actually one of the big reasons why I stayed away from Nissan.

RotaryResurrection 06-19-2007 12:52 AM

It might not be the paint quality that is the problem. It could be the method it's applied with, or the amount that is applied. As with any paint project, preparation is key or the finish will not last.

Rems31 06-19-2007 10:19 AM

I love the smell of paint!! :Drooling_

fullsmoke 06-19-2007 11:38 AM

Not only is it easy to damage the paint, but our 8's have some sort of ability to find and hit random rocks in the air.

The touch up paint for white RX8s is pathetic.

This is gross, but it actually looks like dried up semen when applied. The freaking chips look better. :banghead:

otakurx 06-19-2007 01:08 PM

I did just get them to repaint my trunk where the paint started to peel around the factory wing.

3dartist81 06-19-2007 01:15 PM

where do you get the 3m see through bra?

The bra is good but you constantly have to take it off otherwise it will ruin the paint. Rain washes crud and hard elements in the crevices so every wash it needs to be removed and cleaned. Pain is the butt with all the screws.

RX-8Newb 06-19-2007 01:53 PM

um whatever seems most import paint is thin, my subaru wrx hood looked like the surface of the moon, with craters everywhere and holes in the paint. This MIGHT have been brought on by following people very close that were going too slow in the left hand lane on the autobahn. Rocks at 100mph kinda hurt

And for the record i think mitsu paint is the worst my DSM back a few years ago had such bad paint on the roof that it looked like crinkle coating and you rub your finger over the paint and it would come off on your finger

then it bunches up into the middle of the road and when you are driving to the coast the ass in front of you rides the line - shotguning the front of your car:rant: :banghead:

dynamho 06-19-2007 02:20 PM

Keep your distance

and/or

Use 3M painter's tape for road trips

or

Just don't worry about it

Detrich 06-19-2007 02:36 PM

ditto . . .

RX-8Newb 06-19-2007 03:22 PM

lol my brother put blue painters tape all over the front of is black s2000 looked funny as hell

Red_X8 06-19-2007 03:28 PM

The method which they apply the paint sucks, the paint itself is beautiful. Everytime I bring my car to a show I get asked if its custom paint or if it actually came like that. But I agree with the rock chips, but I think any car that is low to the ground and is driven fast is going to get some chips.

RX-8Newb 06-19-2007 08:30 PM

i got a lot of comments about my paint too, people ask if it is a custom flake

i was well over the 2 second rule when it happened- he flung ALOT of gravel- it was hiting the car 2 lengths behind me

RotorChase 06-20-2007 12:09 PM

yeah IMO the best thing you can do is cough up the cash for the 3M kit and Zaino every couple months, and you will be happy. that 3m cover has kept the front of my car looking pristine, kinda expensive but great investment, you can pay 20-30k on a new car spend the extra 500-1k and get it.

I wish it was some chips

kersh4w 06-20-2007 01:30 PM

i had a rock hit the middle of my hood. left 2 scratches as it bounced.

as soon as i get the money (which is when i sell my car, anyone wanna buy a 95 chrysler lebaron, 170k miles :P) i will wash, touch up, and wax my car. then put on a clearbra from 3m.

i was talking to an owner of a bmw 335i that had one, he said he paid a grand for it. i was like, "whaaaat!?" but apparently he had a shop install it. screw that, i'll pay $300 on ebay and do it myself.

I hear it is not easy and very time consuming. With the amount of curves the front end has I'd prefer to pay an expert to install it.

Razz1 06-20-2007 10:52 PM

It's the ;ow profile of the car and everyone else driving SUV's

Try driving other sports cars.... you will see what I mean.

Gotian 06-21-2007 08:59 AM

I've had my 8 for almost a year now (Time freaking flies when flying in the 8) and I have no front bumper chips but somehow I have some chips on my trunk
