Mazda Original Oil? o_o

I called my dealer and asked what they charge for changing oil. He told me they charge $257 for changing the oil and $157 of that was the cost of the oil. I asked then what kinda oil they use and they told me they use Mazda's own oil 5w-30.

I could do this myself but seeing the oil is that expensive, there's not that much to gain from it anyway. Now I'm wondering, what kinda oil is this and can I get it cheaper somewhere else? They also told me they take $171 for changing the transmission oil. Dunno how much of that was for oil costs.

StealthTL 02-26-2009 09:22 AM

That US dollars?

Sounds a little out-of-line......

I don't know how the Norwegian warranty reads, but here you can change your own or get it done by a garage, as long as you use the same GRADE of oil (meets the specified rating, ISO, SAE etc.) and weight of oil (5w30)

S

J8635621 02-26-2009 09:31 AM

If that is in Norwegian Kroner, then it doesn't sound too crazy. ~$38 ($23 for the oil) for oil change and $25 for transmission. Shouldn't the transmission be a little more expensive than that though?

Ryoma-kun 02-26-2009 09:31 AM

Ya US Dollars with today's currency. I asked him if I could buy oil myself and have them change it for me but he told me he wouldn't take any responsibility then if I bought any other oil than Mazda's recommended one. He also told me they had seen several engine failures due to usage of oil that was 'supposed' to work with the Rx-8 engine but yet failed. Sounds like bullshit to me but dunno.

To j8635621: No, in US Dollars. In Norwegian Kroners it would be 1800 Kr for Oil change, 1100 Kr of them in oil costs. 1200 Kr for changing the tranny oil.

Go to/call another dealer, thats BS. $150 + for oil, What are they charging you for the barrel of oil they ordered last week lol. Another thing you can do is call back, try and talk to the same guy and get his name and everything, then talk to the service manager and see if he says it is the same price. If he says a different price or a different dealership says a different price, I would call the better business bureau. I know its a Stealership, but WTF.

nycgps 02-26-2009 09:51 AM

rofl. thats better than robbery.

Think of it, 20 of those oil changes can probably buy u a new engine, do u think its worth it ?

Ryoma-kun 02-26-2009 10:12 AM

Seems a bit overprice then... Well without starting any flame or discussion, what's a safe bet for oil? Pretty cold around here... I've got as much as syntethic isn't very good, but is half-syntethic ok or should I use pure mineral oil? And is 5w-30 fine?

dozer 02-26-2009 10:13 AM

ALL ive EVER used on my car is castrol 5w30

Ryoma-kun 02-26-2009 10:16 AM

Hm checked Castrol's homepage and I see they've got many different series of oil. What kinda series are you using and is it fullsyntethic?

dozer 02-26-2009 10:18 AM

castrol gtx 5w30 conventional

StealthTL 02-26-2009 10:26 AM

European governments tax the crap out of motor oils - they start around $15/litre....

S

alz0rz 02-26-2009 10:27 AM

your dealership is full of THIEVES and LIARS.

royal purple 5w30 full synthetic.. ftw.

Ryoma-kun 02-26-2009 11:04 AM

Lol just checked the bills that I got from the previous owner... They charged him $77 for the oil... That's like half of the price they gave me. $177 in total for the oil change. I'm so calling them tomorrow.

kersh4w 02-26-2009 12:02 PM

fuck that do it yourself.

use castrol gtx 5w-30 or 10w-30.

or if you want synthetic, like i run, mobil 1 full synthetic 5w-30.

it costs me less than $40 to change my own oil with full synthetic.

SpIcEz 02-26-2009 12:34 PM

Castrol in Europe has many different 0w30 options (Volvo, BMW, EDGE, etc...)

I would go with a 0w30 full synthetic Castrol oil if I was in europe.

I use 0w40 Esso Extra HD synthetic here in Canada.

Shoafb 02-26-2009 01:00 PM

I know when I was in Oslo a couple of years back EVERYTHING was really expensive. Where talking 20 bucks for a burger king combo.

Isn't 0w-30 a bit overkill? 5w-30 should be decent. I see I've been running on Castrol Gtx 10w-30 this far and I think it has worked fine but I'll go down to 5w-30 most likely because of the cold.

StealthTL 02-26-2009 01:20 PM

5W30 is fine, 0w30 is just better.

Modern synthetics can be very thin when cold yet still protect well at operating temps - why not take advantage and get the best?

A 'zero' oil is still MUCH thicker than optimum when cold, no oil is thin enough at cold startup.

Vyndictive 02-26-2009 01:30 PM

This from a country to with massive coastal oil fields and reserves....

Just do the oil change yourself...

Ryoma-kun 02-26-2009 01:33 PM

The Gtx is a mineral based oil. I see Castrol deliver something they call Castrol Edge which is supposed to be their best oil. It's full-syntethic and is delivered in 0w-30. Is that a good choice?

neXib 02-26-2009 01:33 PM

Hey. I wouldn't recommend going with another oil personally. But the dealer here takes 195kr per litre. So that would be 800kr for 4 litres, so yours is one of the more expensive places.

If you are willing to buy in bigger amounts contact Turbohansen on the Mazda OGN forum. He can get you a good price on parts and oil, but only oil if you order big amounts. I just ordered 20L from him.

Ryoma-kun 02-26-2009 01:44 PM

But what kinda oil do they use? Is it a syntethic or what? I've been running on Castrol Gtx since I got the car because previous owner insisted on going mineral oil.

StealthTL 02-26-2009 01:56 PM

If you want to stick with Mazda oil see the dealer and bend over.

If you just want the 'same' grade - see the Norwegian manual and go with the grades they specify.

sooo everyone here seems to be using 5w 30.......or 10w 30........the cap on my rx8 says 5w 20......am I missing something?

I think most here agree that 5w-20 doesn't really cut it. 5w-30 or 10w-30 of some decent brand should be the safe bet I guess.

Well I guess i am going to search because there is bound to be a huge thread on this. Is there a brand that the majority of the forum goers swear by?(sry about the thread hijack)

dmc27 02-26-2009 03:14 PM

Wow . . . definitely price out the same grade of oil and do it yourself, or even find a reputable local shop to do it.

That's some big brass balls charging you over 100% more than they charged the previous owner. Was that previous price at the same dealership?

Yes, you are missing about 239494300211 threads on oil types, synth v. dino, brands, weights . . . etc. etc. ad nauseum . . .

The dealer, and the oil I bought, use the Mazda Dexelia Ultra 5W30. I plan to do my first oilchange ever soon :Eyecrazy: (as in, by me with my own hands, not the car's first )

Don't you always drive with oil in your trunk anyway?

Ryoma-kun 02-26-2009 03:59 PM

I see now why the previous owner got charged so much less. He had them buy Castrol Gtx for the car and not the Mazda recommended one. Yeah I've always carried around a 4l of mentioned oil above that I got from previous owner. But it's empty now. I think I'll go for the Dexelida but change it myself to save some money atleast.

dmc27 02-26-2009 04:05 PM

Problem solved. As an added bonus - it's always more fun going the DIY route!

StealthTL 02-26-2009 04:09 PM

if your paying THAT much for it, why not use Shell Helix Ultra?

There's none better.....

neXib 02-26-2009 04:12 PM

What's the proof that it's the best?

db_8 02-26-2009 05:00 PM

wtf? that's royal BS right there...
i get my oil change at the dealership here sometimes when i'm too lazy and it's $35.00

Did you import your car from the US? In the US Mazda recommends only 5w20, because of fuel economy goals. If yours is a European model, maybe you have a US oil cap.

The oil chart from an Australian owner's manual was posted here a few months ago. It showed 5w20, 5w30 and 5w40 as being interchangeable over the range of -30 C to + 45 C. 10w... were good down to -25 C, and various upper limits. 20w... were good down to -15 C. Temps above 45 C needed various flavors of ...w50.

Based on that chart, I'd recommend 5w30. My local dealer has started using 5w30 instead of the official 5w20, and Virginia is a little warmer than Norway.

My opinion is that regular oil, not synthetic, is just fine. Others differ. There's general agreement here on frequent oil changes, every 3000 miles.

I know Norway is expensive but I can hardly believe they only charge $35 for oilchange and oil using the Dexelia oil that's worth its price in gold here.

alz0rz 02-27-2009 01:12 AM

hell it's $25.99 for an oil change around here.

Ryoma-kun 02-27-2009 01:19 AM

Using what oil...? Or only for the change?

ken-x8 02-27-2009 11:34 AM

I pay $30 for an oil change at my dealer. That includes the cost of the oil and filter. They use Castrol GTX. Also within that price they look the car over for problems and top off the fluids. I have not had to buy my own windshield washer fluid since I bought the car.

Ken

dmc27 02-27-2009 03:14 PM

Most places in the US will be around $30 for oil change w/filter. But that doesn't really help you much, does it? lol

Myriad 02-27-2009 03:21 PM

I paid 36 for an oil change here in VA. Usually do my own but the miles were getting high enough it couldn't wait for my spring break (when I go home)

neXib 02-27-2009 04:30 PM

Shouldn't really be surprising to us should it, when I imported my car it was $70,000 after tax and crap with the currency rates at that time (more like 60k with todays rates). Paying 25 bucks for a litre Dexelia oil at the dealer isn't surprising. But yes, getting it cheaper and doing my oil change myself should save some money :)

Ryoma-kun 02-27-2009 06:18 PM

Heh yeah, I've already accepted that this country is fucked up. I'll probably buy the Dexelia from Mazda this time paying blood price and change it myself. I don't really have much money to spend on buying large suppliements of oil atm.

Most RX-8s are quite reliable, and while most here choose to use thicker oils, the vast majority of RX-8 owners in the US, I assure you, are using 5W-20.
Are you missing something? Hardly. That said, I'd follow Mazda's reco for the country you live in.

delhi 02-27-2009 08:01 PM

Isn't AGIP quite popular over in Europe?

machfive 03-03-2009 08:05 PM

WTF? Conventional Castrol 5w-30 will work just fine.

PhillipM 03-03-2009 08:15 PM

Silkolene Pro-RR 0w-30 is my choice of the amber nectar, don't have any oil pressure or temperature trouble or fluctuations, even with the abuse it gets.
About ~240USD for 8 litres though.

shkfaraz 03-04-2009 05:37 PM

well .. i live in karachi pakistan ... i own a mazda rx8 6 speed 2006 .. am using redline 10w30 since 2 yrs .. and i change it every 3000 kms .. working fine ;)
